What ever happened to Ronn Lucas and Scorch the Dragon? My wife and I saw him perform years ago and we bought a scorch Dragon which we are going to give our 3 year old great grandson for his birthday.
Ventriloquist Ronn Lucas and his puppets, Scorch the Dragon and Gougo the Whale performed intermittently in Las Vegas, with runs at Excalibur, Luxor, Rio, and more, but not in the recent past. The peak of his performing popularity was the 1980s to early 2000s in Vegas; he inked a five-year deal with Planet Hollywood in December 2006, but the show closed midway through 2007 (for reasons that were never divulged).
Lucas grew up in El Paso and, reportedly, could talk without moving his lips as early as 10 years old. He first made the national scene by winning the Showtime cable network's national "Laff-Off" competition in 1991 and appeared on a number of late-night talk shows over the years.
From what we could find, Lucas, now 72, is still active as an entertainer, but seems to be semi-retired, focusing his energies on corporate gigs and private events, rather than high-visibility public shows or new Scorch the Dragon content. Scorch remains his most iconic puppet, though tied to classic performances rather than ongoing new routines.
His website, ronnlucas.com, is still active and you can buy a couple of his DVDs and a talking Scorch doll on eBay.
