I am curious about the big screen on Resorts World. I presume there are rooms behind those display screens. Can the occupants see out through the display? Does light from the screens get back into the rooms?
Yes, yes, and no.
We’ve been able to establish that much in what has been a lengthy exercise in little information from Resorts World. A prolonged back-and-forth about their giant LED screens ultimately produced this direct quote from a press release: “We are thrilled to have one of the largest LED building displays in the U.S. as our 100,000-square-foot LED Screen is an illustration of the progressive technology that Resorts World Las Vegas brings to the Las Vegas Strip." (Whenever you read a "news" story with a quote that starts with "We are thrilled," "We are excited," "We couldn't be more proud," "We are ecstatic," "We are super jazzed," even "We are tickled pink," and the like, you know you're reading the press release.)
The correspondence continued, “We carefully planned the design of this display to ensure it would not impact the guest in-room experience, but rather enhance the guest experience on property with captivating content. Through expert development, guests in the resort’s West Tower still have the ability to enjoy a Strip view without any backlighting or view obstruction.”
Yes, but how? To that, we didn't get an answer. (And while we're on a roll here, whenever you read "enhance the guest experience," first, grab your wallet. Second, safeguard your cash and credit cards.)
So we turned to VitalVegas.com blogger Scott Roeben, who knows a lot about Resorts World.
“They were actually very clever with that screen. While some complain about the dark squares on the screen, those actually preserve the great view. They had to balance resolution with room sales and it seems a good mix to me, given the current technologies available. I've heard zero complaints about the screen being a distraction to hotel guests, so it's directional light (facing south). Obstruction of the view is minimal, while they're obviously making the most of the 100,000-square-foot screen as it can be seen for miles. They're still fine tuning the content, I think, as words aren't particularly legible due to the dark pixels. Otherwise, it's eye-catching and just one of the many large screens around the resort. There's a beautiful one on Zouk nightclub as well.”
We’ve not heard any complaints about Resorts World’s ginormous screens either, so whatever they’re doing must be working just about right.
