Question of the Day - 13 November 2021

Q:

I heard from a friend who just returned from Las Vegas that the lodge at the ski resort near the city burned down. Will there be skiing there this winter? I was planning to combine a ski trip with some gambling and partying and if I can't ski, I might not come.

A:

Your friend got it wrong, so you're in luck for your ski trip to Las Vegas.

It wasn't the lodge at the Las Vegas Ski and Snowboard Resort in Lee Canyon that burned down. It was the Mt. Charleston Lodge, which was completely gutted by a fire in September. This lodge is at the end of NV 157, the Kyle Canyon Road, which passes through the little mountain settlement of Mt. Charleston.

The Ski and Snowboard Resort is off of NV 158 at the top of Lee Canyon. It's now hiring for the upcoming winter season and traditionally opens in normal weather sometime in mid-December.

    Mt Charleston Lodge
The owners of the Mt Charleston Lodge announced they will be rebuilding the lodge but didn't give a timetable to get that done. The nearby cabins were not damaged and are still available for renting. It's a beautiful mountain place to visit anytime of year. It has much cooler temp in summer time than Las Vegas so makes for a nice day trip. In winter the views are even more spectacular, but you need to check weather conditions, the highways in the mountain area sometimes require snow tires or chains.

    Hiking
For those who never get off the strip you should consider hiking in Mt. Charleston. There are some great hikes and it's 20+ degrees cooler. A nice summer respite from the heat.

    Mt Charleston
At the risk of coming off as pedantic, this is a good opportunity make the distinction between the Mountain and the town.

During the winter months, down here on the valley floor there's snow visible on the surrounding mountain ranges. The locals indifferently refer to seeing snow on "Mt Charleston", when they should be referring to Charleston Peak.
