Question of the Day - 26 January 2022

Q:

With all the changes going on in Vegas are the casinos still hosting video poker and slot tournaments?

A:

We asked around and found that yes, some gambling-machine tournaments are still on offer.

However, Bob Dancer tells us, "Not as many as before and often with more entrants and smaller prize pools. This follows the post-pandemic trend of casinos offering less and less to players."

Anthony Curtis says, "I still see them, but mostly at the downtown casinos. Downtown Grand seems to run a lot. Also Golden Nugget. But not many others that I can recall.

We aren't aware of a single master source for listing accurately up-to-date slot and/or video poker tournaments. Vegas.com has a page on slot tournaments, but it starts out with listings for Fiesta Rancho and Henderson, so that means it has to be close to two years old. SlotTournaments.com claims to list tournaments, but we couldn't find any. If you google Las Vegas slot tournaments, you'll come up with some at individual casinos, such as the Cosmopolitan, Bellagio, the D, and the Venetian when we looked.

And if anyone out there in QoDville knows of any regular tournaments, please post them in the comment boxes.

    Invitations
The tournaments I entered were always "invitation only" issued through my host. I presume the questioner is more interested in tournaments open to the general public. That said, I haven't received a tournament invitation in some time, and the offers I am getting are significantly poorer than in the past (2 comped nights instead of 3, $125 free play instead of $150-$225, etc.).

    slot tournaments
vp tournaments were the best but never common, I've been doing the Mgm tournaments last few years but those are invitation only. They're fun but Covid has really affected them

    Local bars?
Before the Great Plague hit, many local bars offered free or low buy-in tournaments, usually on weeknights. Though bar VP pay schedules are uniformly horrible, these little tourneys were fun, and since the food in those places is always good, you could make a mini-evening of it. I wonder if all that's a relic of the past. (You know, the "Vegas wasn't a ripoff" era.)

We did a VP tournament at the California late last year and are signed up for a slot tourney in March.

This in via email from Roy
Downtown Grand has discontinued their weekly slot Tournament that ran on Tuesdays. Seniors received one free entry and anyone else who earned 25 points also received an entry.

Only about 40 people would enter it every Tuesday. First prize (for those with the lowest card level) was $150 free play. I entered it about 4 times and won it once. Needless to say, it was very poorly promoted, like most things at the Downtown Grand.
