Question of the Day - 13 October 2025

Q:

What is the difference between a regular slot machine and a video lottery terminal?

A:

Video lottery terminals (VLTs), as the name implies, typically operate as part of a state lottery system. The "lottery" connection is the key distinction between VLTs and traditional casino slot machines.

Unlike casino slots, which come with their own independent random number generator (RNG), VLTs are linked to a central server operated and regulated by lottery commissions. The server controls game outcomes and ensures fairness and compliance with gaming laws. As such, a VLT can look, sound, and play like a traditional slot and many offer similar games -- video poker, keno, and spinning reels -- but the game results are determined by the central system.

The payouts for some VLT systems are drawn from a predetermined prize pool, similar to a lottery. Other systems use a central RNG to independently determine the outcome of each play. In the latter case, the odds of winning remain the same in every round, similar to a slot machine.

VLTs are commonly found in licensed establishments, such as bars, pubs, lounges, restaurants, truck stops, and racinos, not just traditional casinos. They're also subject to specific state or regional regulations that govern payouts and distribution.

No, because unlike progressives or bonusing games, they don't "bank" jackpots. They pay out based on a percentage of what has recently been put in. If the accumulated amount is past the threshold, the VLT will FORCE payouts on the machines that are being played. But you can't tell when that is going to happen.
