Question of the Day - 17 August 2017

Q:

With the May closure of perennial Smith & Wollensky Steak House on the Las Vegas Strip; any word on their new location? Love their dry-aged steaks! But most of all their hostess, wait, bar, and kitchen staff were long-time employees who made all the difference with the success of S&W Las Vegas.

A:

The original Smith & Wollensky opened in Manhattan in 1977; the names were pulled out of the phone book and sounded good together. Seven restaurants in six total
locations include Chicago, Miami Beach, Columbus, OH, Houston, two in Boston, and the newest, since 2015, in London.

Until it closed on May 27, Smith & Wollensky had been a landmark on the south Strip for 19 years. And yes, many of the employees had been there the whole time.

The Review-Journal reported that the owners of S&W’s next-door neighbor, the Showcase Mall, paid upwards of $60 million for the 1.8 acres of Strip real estate, including or course the big 30,000-square-foot 635-seat restaurant.

According to EaterLasVegas.com, the small chain hasn’t abandoned Las Vegas. So far, though, there’s been no announcement of a new location, but will be announced in the “coming months.”

$50 steak is not our style
Even in my home state of Michigan, we do not eat at steak houses much except if we are using a gift card from "Flemings" which, like S&W, have less than 8 restaurants nationwide. We buy our premium quality beefsteak at Costco and we make an outstanding steak at home. So we eat mostly prime rib in Vegas. Great BBQ also! Someday we will get "comped" at a Vegas "Ritzy steak Joint" but I'm not holding my breath for it!
