Question of the Day - 22 June 2022

Q:

Do you think there will ever again be a buffet in Vegas comparable to the Sterling Brunch?

A:

Our first impulse is to say no.

The Sterling Brunch at Bally's was a one-of-a-kind epicurean experience and these days, with the number-one priority of the casino companies being increasing shareholder value, the trend is high prices for, alas, garden-variety caliber. Even a humdrum dinner buffet like Bellagio's is $75-$85 per person, including tax and tip.

The Wynn's spread is a noticeable notch above Bellagio's for $80-$85 and it's $90-$100 for the Bacchanal Buffet at Caesars. That's approaching the price of the Sterling Brunch right there, which was charging $125 per person when it closed last year.

So how much would a buffet comparable to the Sterling have to be today? $130? $140? $150? Of course, it included king crab legs, American sturgeon caviar, and unlimited Perrier-Jouët Champagne, so -- what? $350 for a couple including tax and tip?

Who would pay that?

But as we say, that was our initial inclination. Given the prices of high-end dining on the Strip these days (we recently ran a QoD about how much it costs to eat at some of the restaurants at Resorts World, where $350 for two would be a bargain), it's not inconceivable that a food and beverage executive at, say, Paris, Park MGM, Cosmopolitan, or Circus Circus (kidding) might give it a shot, though probably not at Bally's, in the process of being rebranded as the (rustic downhome country-cousin) Horseshoe.

And considering how buffet crazed Las Vegas visitors are, it's possible that enough of them would pony up that kind of money for the kind of out-of-this-world AYCE experience that the Sterling Brunch represented.

So which is it? To us, it's a pick 'em.

But what do youse say? Let's take an informal poll on the question. Did you ever pay the freight to eat at the Sterling Brunch and would or wouldn't you fade, say, $350 for a reincarnation of it?

    Go off strip for seafood
Crab Corner Maryland, Shucks Tavern and the Oyster Bar at Palace Station are all much better values than strip seafood traps. Seafood for breakfast is alright with me and its the best time to hit the Oyster Bar.

    To Answer
No I never ate there and I for sure wouldn't at that price.

$350 is a lot of clams
I did enjoy the Sterling brunch many years ago (in the pre-ripoff days), and it was definitely worth the price ($54.95, if memory serves). I wouldn't pay anything near $350 for that or any other kind of high-end buffet. Do I think there will be such a buffet offered in the near future? Yes. Maybe it'll feature dishes never presented before, such as roast human (carving station).

    Wanted to try it..
Every time I went to the web site, the place was booked out months in advance. For a place with such high demand, I don't understand why this isn't still a thing. Seems more and more Vegas is doing its best at giving us what we don't want.

    nope
I enjoy a breakfast buffet or brunch but not paying big bucks to serve myself.

    it's inconceivable
If I won a jackpot large enough to take care of me and my family and friends for as long as we all live, I wouldn't even consider paying that kind of money for a buffet. Then again, if I won it at Bally's they might comp it to me, so I WOULD go there once...ONCE.

    What's really needed
A Smorgasbord instead of AYCE buffets.
Better food, better variety, and better prices.
And if you just absolutely have to bend the gluttony commandment then buy more.

Tons of food goes to waste in buffets especially when the quality is subpar and one byte taken then trashed.
No wonder buffet prices have sky rocketed over the years.

But for the QoD poll question.
No, never went, no incentive, and I've eaten at restaurants with no prices on the menu and never a final bill exceeding $100/person serving better cuisine than the Sterling Brunch ever did.

    Sterling Brunch poll
    1. Never did. Intended to, just never got around to it. (Those round tuits, they make wonderful pets...groan.)

    2. Cost of $350 for two INCLUDING tax and tip is only $100 more than the previous $125 per person = $250 total (NOT including tax and tip?). So my answer to "would I" is YES, as long as "for two" and "tax and tip included" are correct. Maybe the question should be re-worded.

    Comps!
what the question (and many of the comments) ignores is that most people don't pay cash for casino food at higher end restaurants. i've eaten a couple of times at the sterling brunch, always using accumulated comps or discretionary comps from a CZR host. at $350, i'd take a discretionary comp for a reimagined sterling buffet, but would i dip into my own personal comp balance? i doubt it. there are far better values out there, even when spending monopoly money.

    >>no, never went, no incentive, and I've eaten at restaurants with no prices on the menu and never a final bill exceeding $100/person serving better cuisine than the sterling brunch ever did.<<

if you never went, how could you possibly know?

    >>every time I went to the web site, the place was booked out months in advance.<<

open table had a limited number if reservations available, two or three weeks out. otherwise, it was bookable - in my experience - strictly by hosts, or simply calling or showing up on the day.

    Horseshoe Buffet
Roasting a whole Ox - that would be worth the price of admission!

I have been to the Sterling Brunch a few times, Last time I went the price was $95 and my host comped me. The food was fabulous, but I do not think that paying $350 for a party of 2 would be my idea of fun. For those of you who are too young to remember, there used to be a casino's way of rewarding players for their play and loyalty These benefits were generally referred to as COMPS! Since the casinos have changed their way of doing business, with the bottom line being the most important thing to the Bean Counters who run the casinos, many people do not really know what the word COMP means. Vegas can still be a good place to go but the days of adequately rewarding players for their play in the casinos is Long Gone!

    Great promotional reminisce
Harrah's or Caesars ran a promotion where you'd get a $10 comp coupon for visiting 3 of their casinos. If you visited another 3 casinos they'd give you a $20 comp coupon. You could do this every day. Long story short....The Sterling Brunch let us use those comp coupons. They even gave me back a $10 comp coupon that I had used for the tax since comps aren't taxed. We think fondly of that promotion. Especially, the homeless standing in line at Caesars Palace. The Sterling Brunch was $65 at that time.

The wealthiest tend to visit Vegas now
I think some of the suggestions to go off the strip and dine (and naming where) are refreshing to see; however, Vegas is really the "new" Monaco or Macau.

In the past, Vegas always had the privileged to dine, stay, and gamble. But there was much more in between and on the low scale, hoping Lady Luck will be on their side.

Back then, comps were plentiful Now? Not so much unless you spend more, a lot more. Vegas is becoming a very much privileged and elite destination, reflecting how in our society more and more people, especially those in their 20s who have natural luck and are fortunate to have wealthy parents or received a hefty inheritance. Of course, many don't see it that way.

The gap between the poor or hardworking, thrifty or frugal vacationer/traveller rarely visits Vegas now.

Instead, we see many who won't think twice about the price of goods or services. If they like and want it, they buy it. At least that's how my circle of associates and friends see things (now).

    Sterling Brunch was amazing
Went to the Sterling Brunch many times over last 20+ years and was always one of best meals in Vegas. First introduced by my host at Desert Inn so that tells you the caliber of what you are getting. What can't be overlooked for the price is the quality of what you get: king crab, lobster, caviar, lamb, beef tenderloin. But even more important unlimited French Champagne. Last brand was Pierre-Jouet which in a store will run you $50 and at a restaurant at least $100 a bottle. Do the math a couple has 2 bottles that is $200 off the bat. Now if you don't like Champagne then agree would not be worth it. Also only Brunch I knew of on Strip that served French Champagne - everyone else is Prosecco, Cava, or California sparkling. Miss the Sterling Brunch and as long as quality was still there would pay $350 a couple.

    Lol
Only if it were comped and even then it's a deep dig to cover the tip. Corporate owned casinos are going to kill their own business. Supposedly they think only about "shareholders", but in reality it's their own wallet and granted shares that top officers of corps are thinking about the most.

    Brunch
Never ate at the Sterling Brunch but remember back in the '90s eating at a Sunday Brunch in the Sante Fe casino. Don't remember the name of the brunch but it was excellent and not priced too high, considering the quality of food served.

  • Ken Orgera Jun-24-2022
    was a value
It was about $95 with a small discount when I went with my youngest son. Lobster, Filet Mignon, Rack of Lamb, caviar, and French Champagne it was worth it at least for 1 time. Today I dont consume as much, would only go with a good eater. I was disappointed with my son making mimosas here! We had went to Terribles champagne brunch that trip and he drank the champagne straight, I made mimosas. The cost was either 2.95 or 4.95 it was my home casino.

    Brazilian Steakhouse
The meat keeps coming on swords until you cry uncle. And much cheaper than the high end buffets in town.

    Yikes!!!
No, I never ate at Sterling Brunch and I sure wouldn't eat at any buffet for $350. I can put that money to much better use going to Hoover Dam, Valley of Fire, or Grand Canyon (probably all three) and eat somewhere much more reasonable. I'll get my "fancy" food at home either homemade or at a local restaurant. Spending a large chunk of my travel budget on one meal in Vegas would mean I wouldn't eat anything else while I'm there. I'd much prefer to keep my tummy full for the five or so days I am there. No one meal is worth that amount of money. Most will think I am very old fashioned to think this way but I am old so I guess I'm allowed to do so.
