Question of the Day - 06 May 2018

Q:

Question of the Day has been “conspicuous by its absence” on the question of Steve Wynn’s guilt or innocence of the sexual harrasment charges against him. Surely readers other than myself have asked you to comment on the situation. You’ve been around so long and seem to have your ear to the ground on so many things about Vegas. Were there rumors? Do you know anyone? Anything undeniable floating around?

A:

As many of you have no doubt noticed, this is the fourth question in a row that we’re answering about the Steve Wynn situation. And, for perhaps obvious reasons, we saved this one for last.

Yes, we’ve received a few QoD submissions asking for our take on Wynn's guilt or innocence. But not as many as you might expect. One reason might be that Anthony Curtis addressed the issue in his column in the February Las Vegas Advisor, which perhaps answered the question for many readers.

“Wynn maintains his innocence, though the evidence seems damning and I can attest that stories about such activity have circulated around town for decades,” Anthony wrote. “Did he? Didn’t he? Whether he did or not, I trust that will be sorted out in upcoming legal wranglings."

Here, we can add that Wynn paid out a whopping $7.5 million settlement to a Wynn Las Vegas manicurist who accused him of pressuring her for sex. The size of the 2005 settlement reflects the fact that it also involved a paternity suit.

Also, as far as damning evidence goes, The Wall Street Journal, whose story broke open the floodgates, interviewed "dozens of people who have worked at Mr. Wynn’s casinos and told of behavior that cumulatively would amount to a decades-long pattern of sexual misconduct by Mr. Wynn.”

All that said, we believe that Anthony summed it up quite well when he wrote, "One thing’s for sure: The guy really knew how to build casinos ... Vegas will survive without Steve Wynn, but there will be at least a little something missing.”

To answer this question directly, we here at QoD think that it's likely that justice, whether mortal via court cases and/or conscience, or divine via karma and/or Judgment Day, will ultimately be served.

    Status Quo
Look... this has been the status quo for as long as men have been hiring women. Position of power...ego that goes with that position... "its just business" seems to fit Mr Wynn. He DOES build great casinos... and he's starting to look like Wayne Newton.

    Powerful old white men
You have money, you're a white male, you have power, you can take what you want. That's been the mindset of our society for centuries, and even more so now with our current President being a sexual predator (in addition, of course, to being a thief, liar, and traitor) and tens of millions of adoring followers still attending his hate rallies. Wynn and Trump both know how to do one thing well. That has given them a free pass to ignore the rules of common decency.

This in via email from Dan
We ALL know that Steve Wynn was not the best person in the world. But neither was the mob. Without Visionary's like Steve Wynn and the Mob and countless other less than "Morally Pure" Las Vegans, our city would not be the success it is today.

Perhaps we should allow him to live the rest of his life a Disgraced man but also remember the Great Things he did for Las Vegas?
