Question of the Day - 21 September 2019

Q:

My boyfriend and I are big hikers. We had to be in Las Vegas earlier this year for his business and we decided to take an urban hike and walk the Strip from north to south. Wow. We had no idea there was so much horizontal space between hotels. Everything looks so close on the map. We started wondering which hotels occupy the most land. Doing a little online research, I stumbled upon your Question of the Day and figured if anyone knew, you did. And your link to the results of the best-lounges poll is at the bottom of the list.

A:

Here are the footprints of the top 20 resort-casinos in terms of acreage, as recorded by the Clark County Assessor (those with less than 10 acres aren't listed).

  • Wynn Las Vegas/Encore: 183.6 acres (includes the golf course)
  • Mandalay Bay: 118.9 acres
  • Excalibur/Luxor: 108 acres (the two properties are registered as one with the Clark County Assessor)
  • MGM Grand: 91.8 acres
  • The Mirage: 77 acres
  • City Center: 76 acres
  • Circus Circus: 68.4 acres
  • Caesars Palace: 66.2 acres
  • Bellagio: 55 acres
  • Venetian/Palazzo: 43.6 acres
  • Tropicana: 35.1 acres
  • Bally’s Las Vegas: 29.6 acres
  • Park MGM: 24 acres
  • Paris-Las Vegas: 24 acres
  • New York-New York: 20 acres
  • Treasure Island: 19.5 acres
  • Flamingo: 19.4 acres
  • Harrah’s: 17.9 acres
  • SLS: 17.5 acres
  • Planet Hollywood: 11.8 acres

And here's your link to the results of the poll on the best lounges in Lounge City.

    Bellagio?
Ok, am I the only one that assumes Bellagio was mistakenly left off this list?

    Bellagio so small?
Is Bellagio really the little guy on the Strip? Does the lake not count?

    Bellagio
So sorry. Bellagio was an oversight.

However, it raised a slightly thorny issue of current size, but we just did some fancy calculating and determined that, though it was originally 126 acres (including the old Dunes golf course), the 76-acre City Center was carved off the property. But five acres of that belonged to the old Boardwalk (which is where the Waldorf Astoria now stands) and a couple of surrounding properties.

So not having the County Assessor to check with for verification today, we're guesstimating that Bellagio is 55 acres. It certainly has to be more than 10: The lake alone is 8 acres.
