Question of the Day - 07 April 2022

Q:

What was the first casino on the Strip and what's the oldest casino on the Strip?

A:

The first casino to be built on Highway 91, the road to Los Angeles that was later nicknamed the Las Vegas Strip, was the Pair-o-Dice Club; it opened shortly after Nevada legalized wide-open casino gambling in 1931.

The first bona fide casino-resort on what had been called the Strip for a few years when it opened was the El Rancho Vegas, which had 63 rooms on April 3, 1941 (and was destroyed by a fire in 1960).

The oldest original casino that remains on the Las Vegas Strip is the Flamingo, which opened in 1946. It celebrated its 75th birthday last year.

    Red Rooster
Why no mention of Red Rooster? It was issued the first gaming licence in Nevada and was located where Mirage is now. Their licence was revoked just 100 days later, for selling booze during prohibition, but they beat out Pair-o-dice by a few weeks.

    How about ALL strip casinos
One of these days it would be nice to have an extensive list of all the casinos or casino/hotels that have been on the strip. There are so many that have come and gone, but it would really bring back a lot of memories for many of us. Maybe also include the stand-alone Race and Sports books that populated Las Vegas Blvd. before the casinos got heavily into that business.

    Flamingo Capri
There was a casino there but I was too young. One of the first pools with manufactured rock landscaping. Some rooms remain inside the garage of the Linq the last time I looked.
