Question of the Day - 03 February 2021

Q:

Were the lights on the Strip dimmed for Sheldon Adelson?

And your link to the new poll about buffets is below the photo.

A:

Erica Johnson of the Las Vegas Convention & Visitors Authority replies, “The lights on the Strip were not dimmed to honor Sheldon Adelson. Several resorts incorporated a photo of Mr. Adelson into their marquee programming as a tribute.” A photo of that is below.

She adds, “Our records indicate that the lights on the Strip have been dimmed on the following occasions. However, it's difficult to ascertain whether this is a definitive list:”

  • October 8, 2017, to honor the 1 October victims and heroes
  • April 6, 2017, when Don Rickles passed
  • February 18, 2015, in observance of Jerry Tarkanian
  • June 11, 2004, in memory of Ronald Reagan
  • September 14, 2001, three days after 9/11
  • May 15, 1998,  after Frank Sinatra passed
  • March 9, 1996, after George Burns passed
  • December 28, 1995, after Dean Martin passed
  • May 16, 1990, after Sammy Davis Jr. passed
  • November 22, 1963, after JFK was assassinated

And here's your link to the new poll: If buffets don't return (or are scaled back) ...

    Who decides?
So, who decides when lights on the Strip will be dimmed?

    Candy

    That’s a good question.
I would fully have expected that a man of Sheldon Adelson’s stature, philanthropy and accomplishments, particularly in relation to Las Vegas, would have made this list ahead of some of those listed. So really ... to whom is entrusted the decision regarding this expression of memory and honor?

Seems like an arbitrary selection process
Reagan? Why not Ford, Nixon or LBJ? And I don't see Carter getting a similar tribute (assuming he's the next ex-President to pass).

What makes the Rat Pack so special that Elvis wasn't similarly honored?

Dimming the lights for Sheldon is about as bad of an idea as renaming LAS after Harry Reid.

    history
The Rat Pack, especially Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr are synonymous with all the glitz, glamor and cocktail culture Las Vegas was selling in the early sixties. They helped create Las Vegas as a world-class entertainment destination. All three have thoroughfares, not just some side street, named after them.
Elvis OD'd which was probably the reason he wasn't honored. He flopped on the strip in 1956 and gained his Las Vegas fame at the International, now the Westgate.
As far as who decides when the casinos go dim, I think the various casino conglomerates get together on that. Not one individual.

    Dimming of Strip Lights
Nothing could be worse than doing ANYTHING for Harry Reid!

  • Jeff Feb-03-2021
    Harry Reid, Si. Adelson, No!
"Dimming the lights for Sheldon is about as bad of an idea as renaming LAS after Harry Reid."

Actually, dimming the lights for Sheldon is about as bad an idea as was naming LAS after Senator Pat McCarran.

Adelson's devotion to Las Vegas was overshadowed by his devotion to Israel, Macau, the criminal 45th president of the United States, and himself, not necessarily in that order.
