Question of the Day - 19 January 2021

Q:

Where, along the Strip, will the Boring Company's tunnels run? Will they be closer to the Strip than the Monorail route? Sometimes, it's closer to walk than to take the Monorail (before the current closure) because you have to walk so far from the Monorail to the Strip.

A:

Well, eliminating that inconvenience is one of Elon Musk’s selling points for the "Las Vegas Loop."

As you can see in Boring's map of the Loop (below), it is routed to run underneath or directly alongside the Las Vegas Strip, then branch out at the south end, with a route to McCarran International Airport and a sub-loop west on Flamingo to the Gold Coast and Palms, then south to the Orleans, east on Tropicana Avenue to the Wild Wild West site, then south again to Allegiant Stadium.

It also runs north along Las Vegas Blvd. all the way to downtown.

Already, stations for the Loop have been approved for the southeast corner of Resorts World Las Vegas and near the porte cochere of Encore. We don’t know exactly how close to the Strip access to the Loop will be, but any amount of additional foot travel appears to be minimal so far.

    Sounds good?
The long walk to the monorail is the reason why I only used it twice in all the years it was open. Sounds like that won't be an issue for the Loop.

I wonder what it will cost to build and how much public $ will be used.

And, what will it cost per ride?

I don't know the funding details but hopefully it's privately funded and the tax payers are not on the hook (too much?) for the construction.

    Map of the Loop
Map of the loop is missing.

    Map
I don't know where I got it, but I have a map that has a download datestamp of 8/4/20.

It shows a stop near Fremont & Casino Center Drive, with a dotted line tunnel that follows Fremont then turns south on Las Vegas Blvd, all the way to Russell Rd. There are short branches at almost every casino, and branches to Allegiant, T1 and T3. It does NOT indicate a branch to Rio/Palms or to Virgin, UNLV, etc. but those destinations have certainly been discussed.

It really bothers me that it goes straight down the strip. I mean, you'd think there would be some deviations to avoid some infrastructure like sewers, etc. There *IS* a solid line to show the completed tunnel at the convention center, and it's got some curves to it.

Also, south of Russell Road, there is an arrow that indicates it's gonna continue to Los Angeles. Really?

Anyway, I uploaded the map here:

At least he doesn't think small...
And as for Los Angeles--why not? Probably make it before the bullet train.

    Still unclear
I'm still wondering just how the traffic will flow and how many people the system could handle at one time once/if it's fully built. Can you just get in and select a direct destination or would it be more like a train where you have to stop at all the stops until you get where you want? And just hw many cars do they anticipate could be taken off the road once fully operational? I'm also afraid the cost per ride could exceed Uber/Lyft since you'd pay per person, not per ride.

    20,000 an hour
Here’s a fan-made simulation showing the Vegas Loop moving 20,000 people an hour. Hmm.

    Thoughts
    1. I like this Loop idea and would like to make sure that it will succeed, so let's all send a $$$ contribution to Elon Musk to make sure that he doesn't run out of money.
    2. Will each car have a TV/movie screen showing a film or a program so that the ride won't be Boring?
    3. How can we call this thing a Loop if it branches out from a main line instead of going in a circle?
    4. I'm not sure that Musk has thought about ways in which this could possibly go wrong, because he's known to have tunnel vision.
    5. As for the system extending all the way to Los Angeles, I don't think that this is what the indication on the map means. Because slavery no longer exists, there's no need for an underground railroad to another state.
