Question of the Day - 21 January 2022

Q:

With the Super Bowl now definitely going to Las Vegas in February 2024, how far in advance will we be able to make hotel reservations (a rough idea, don't need precise dates) and which hotels/chains are looking to take bookings first?

A:

The Super Bowl rolls into Las Vegas on February 11, 2024, although fans and gamblers are expected to swarm Sin City well ahead of game day, partying until they drop. Hopefully, the football players themselves will manage to stay focused on the title game, despite Las Vegas’ many allures.

We started with one of the biggest hoteliers on the Strip and the one closest to Allegiant Stadium: MGM Resorts International. Spokesman Scott Ghertner wrote us, “The team is working through those details and we will be sure to keep fans updated once finalized.” (The company’s weekly “MGM Minute” on YouTube is very helpful for such things.)

Over at The Palms, now owned by Las Vegas Raiders co-sponsor the San Manuel Band of Mission Indians, spokeswoman Celena Haas said reservation policies were “to be determined, and thank you for your interest in the Palms!”

Boyd Gaming’s David Strow informed us, “As we do not take bookings more than one year out, February 2023 is the earliest you’d be able to book a room at a Boyd Las Vegas property for the Super Bowl.”

That was as definite as anyone would get, including a random sampling of hotel-casino and non-casino-hotel online reservations systems. We also did a search for how far in advance the big hotel chains will take reservations and most are like Boyd: only up to a year ahead. Radisson claims to do so 730 days in advance, but when we tried to book rooms at Treasure Island, which is part of Radisson's reservations system, the farthest out we could do so was December 27, 2022.

Our advice is to determine where you'd like to stay for the Super Bowl, then start checking in online and via phone perhaps 18 months in advance. If your chosen hotels aren't reserving yet, eventually, you'll learn when they plan to. Then you can be among the first in line when the time comes.

And one more word to the wise regarding the 2024 Big Game. Be sure to start saving your pennies now. Room rates for the 10-14 days surrounding the Super Bowl are expected to be the highest in Las Vegas history. And they get pretty high for events like New Year's Eve and the major conventions. That inflationary pressure will certainly also be reflected in seats at sports books, tickets for Super Bowl parties, parking fees, Uber/Lyft rides, specially priced restaurant menus, shows and attractions, etc. Applied Analysis has projected a half-billion dollars in economic impact, so plan to account for some of that.

    Host
I think it would be a good idea to get in touch with your host. He or she may be very helpful in getting a reservation for you, and hopefully either comped or at a greatly reduced price.

    Gouging
There ott to be some laws about gouging. I know when hand sanitizer was the big thing - people were buying out Walmart and flogging it on Ebay and Amazon and the whole world was saying shame on you.

The hotel industry has posted room rates on the inside of doors, which are already inflated - I remember $175/night posted on the door of the Imperial Palace back in the $80's when the going rate during high season never peaked above $45 for that dump, yet I paid $225 during the Comdex convention. I can only imagine some of the room rates for SuperBowl.

    Hotel alternative
A friend of mine that lives in southern California is a big football fan and he has an RV. He's planning to drive to Las Vegas in his RV with a friend and stay at an RV park, there's several in the area including Sam's Town. That should cost a lot less than a Strip hotel room.

    Not Gouging
It's not gouging when it's pure supply and demand. Gouging as described by another responder was due to "externalities," such as acts of God or natural disasters. There are laws against gouging during those times.

If I Want To Be There
My cousin lives in Henderson, moved there the day before everything shut down March 2020. He has 2 spare bedrooms. I probably could be there if I want to be. Only if a miracle happened: the Bears were in the Super Bowl that year. Right! haha

    Y2K Revisited?
Remember all the hype about Y2K? All the casinos assumed everybody would flock to Las Vegas and pay exorbitant prices just to be in Las Vegas when the new millennium started.. Nobody fell for it, and the prices came back to earth pretty quickly.

This QOD answer sounds eerily similar to Y2K.
