Question of the Day - 01 February 2025

Q:

What is Super Bowl weekend like in Las Vegas?

A:

It’s Vegas, baby, so the Super Bowl, one week from tomorrow, is one of the most vibrant, action-packed, crowded (more than 300,000 visitors expected), and expensive weekends of the year, blending the excitement of one of the world’s biggest sporting events with the unique energy of Sin City. You’ve got sports bets to the moon, every advantage player in the universe getting down, celebrity appearances, whale appearances, the hoi polloi clogging up the whole city, prices through the roof.

You can sit in your couch, alone in your hotel room, with a bag of Orville Rickenbacker and a six pack of Heineken, or shell out $2,100 for you and five friends for a Private Watch Zone at the Circa sports book, or pay $275 (table for 10 $2,500) at the Westgate’s Big Game Party. Or spend the day at an exclusive shindig in a high-end suite at the Wynn that no money can buy your way into.

The sports books are jam-packed, especially those that don’t charge for seats (or standing room) and fill up early. Every casino hosts Super Bowl watch parties, ranging from free gatherings in ballrooms, such as at South Point, Downtown Events Center (at the D), and Binion’s to lavish private events in the biggest suites at the high-end megaresorts. And every bar in town is overflowing with locals and in-the-know out-of-towners.

And that’s just for the Big Game. Plenty of performers schedule concerts or shows over that weekend, so there are additional entertainment options beyond the game itself. And the parties at the clubs, bars, and lounges are basically non-stop from early Friday to Sunday late.

The surge in visitors is not unlike New Year’s Eve and the Fourth of July. Everywhere is crowded, hotel rates skyrocket, traffic is ridiculous. And since everyone is watching the same few-hour event at the same time, when it’s over, the real fun starts, with an epic traffic jam on I-15 back to So. Cal and shoulder-to-shoulder throngs at Reid International.

All in all, it’s a whirlwind weekend, the second biggest party of the year (and not too far off from the first). But even then, this year’s Super Bowl weekend won’t be anywhere near as crazy as last year’s, when the Big Game itself was held here. That was one for the ages.

    Yep
Several years ago, I did a three week stay in Las Vegas. By maneuvering all over the city, I managed to stay free, using comps and coupons, for every night! Except one. 🫤

I found myself with no place to stay one Saturday night. The room rates were crazy all over town! I was seriously considering sleeping in my rental car that night.

LVA MRB to the rescue! I found a coupon for one night at Golden Gate Casino. I forget the exact price but it was a good one, especially given the prices I found all around town!

After I settled into my room, I wandered out onto Fremont Street. OMG!! What a zoo! I had never seen it like this before! What the bleep was going on?
(Head slap!) I suddenly realized that it was the day before the Superbowl! Doh!

Anyway, thanks LVA for saving me from an overnight in my car.

Why on earth would anyone want to be there that weekend?
Seems like, aside from the extreme expense, a horrible experience that would be best avoided by any sane person.

    Admit it, Kevin
Admit that there aren't that many sane people left in the world. Not in Las Vegas, not in DC (regardless of party), not anywhere.

I avoid LV for the big events, mostly because of prices and crowds. Whether I'm sane is a matter of conjecture.

    Agree w K Dawg
We aim for the deadest week of the year, just after NFR. Although I was sorely tempted by the Plaza's bingo NYE deal this year--up to five nights for $400 including the bingo.

Imagine the lines at the sports books AFTER the game. Heck naw.

    Flight in
About 10 years ago, me and my buddies, all in our very early 60"s then, with paunchy bellies, flew from BUR to LAS on Thursday late afternoon, weekend of the Super Bowl. Since none of us could walk well (bullcrap), we did the pre-board, and had the front bulkhead seats. What a show. We were just about the only men on the flight, which was full. All women, hookers, dancers, and a few older women who were doing the same as we were. The perfume smell was sickening. I though the flight attendants were going to throw a few of them off the plane due to how they were dressed. It was a real show. It was the loudest flight I have ever been on. 42 minutes of kackle. Was the funniest thing we had ever seen. We got off last, just so we could see the show again. The pilot and first officer were at the cockpit door watching, as soon as the plane stopped. That was as fun as the game was. We were invited to a VIP party at Paris, and that was boring in comparison.
