What is Super Bowl weekend like in Las Vegas?
It’s Vegas, baby, so the Super Bowl, one week from tomorrow, is one of the most vibrant, action-packed, crowded (more than 300,000 visitors expected), and expensive weekends of the year, blending the excitement of one of the world’s biggest sporting events with the unique energy of Sin City. You’ve got sports bets to the moon, every advantage player in the universe getting down, celebrity appearances, whale appearances, the hoi polloi clogging up the whole city, prices through the roof.
You can sit in your couch, alone in your hotel room, with a bag of Orville Rickenbacker and a six pack of Heineken, or shell out $2,100 for you and five friends for a Private Watch Zone at the Circa sports book, or pay $275 (table for 10 $2,500) at the Westgate’s Big Game Party. Or spend the day at an exclusive shindig in a high-end suite at the Wynn that no money can buy your way into.
The sports books are jam-packed, especially those that don’t charge for seats (or standing room) and fill up early. Every casino hosts Super Bowl watch parties, ranging from free gatherings in ballrooms, such as at South Point, Downtown Events Center (at the D), and Binion’s to lavish private events in the biggest suites at the high-end megaresorts. And every bar in town is overflowing with locals and in-the-know out-of-towners.
And that’s just for the Big Game. Plenty of performers schedule concerts or shows over that weekend, so there are additional entertainment options beyond the game itself. And the parties at the clubs, bars, and lounges are basically non-stop from early Friday to Sunday late.
The surge in visitors is not unlike New Year’s Eve and the Fourth of July. Everywhere is crowded, hotel rates skyrocket, traffic is ridiculous. And since everyone is watching the same few-hour event at the same time, when it’s over, the real fun starts, with an epic traffic jam on I-15 back to So. Cal and shoulder-to-shoulder throngs at Reid International.
All in all, it’s a whirlwind weekend, the second biggest party of the year (and not too far off from the first). But even then, this year’s Super Bowl weekend won’t be anywhere near as crazy as last year’s, when the Big Game itself was held here. That was one for the ages.
