Question of the Day - 08 September 2020

Q:

Just wondering if taxicabs still charge by the mile to Strip hotels from the airport or is the Strip broken into zones? Also, is Bell Trans still up and running?

A:

In their own words, Bell Trans is “not providing any per-capita service” for the indefinite future. What they mean by per capita is, "people taken individually." (Normally, "taken" in the definition of per capita is a synonym for "considered" individually, but in this case, you should "take" it literally.)

As for taxis, we're now a zone city. The Las Vegas Taxicab Authority instituted zone-based pricing for the Strip on January 1.

Fares between Sunset Road and Tropicana Avenue are $19. Between Tropicana and Flamingo Road it will cost you $23, and $27 to go between Flamingo and Sahara Avenue, the northern terminus of the zones. They're bounded on the west by I-15 and on the east roughly by Paradise Road.

Said the Taxicab Authority’s Scott Whittemore, “Instituting flat fare zones between the airport and the Las Vegas Strip corridor provides the riding public certainty and transparency in the fares they pay, helps eliminate the scourge of long-hauling, and levels the playing field between drivers and between taxi companies.”

So yes. You didn't ask, but in case you're wondering, Uber and Lyft had more than a little to do in motivating the change to zones.

    About time
It's amazing how long this took. I've been yelling at cab drivers for long-hauling me for over a decade. The fact that the Taxicab Authority sanctioned this larceny for decades is appalling.

    Self-inflicted harm
Driving a cab provides a job in a town with lots of people that maybe don't have the skills or personality to work at something better. And it can be a decent part-time job. No doubt many of the cab drivers in Las Vegas are honest, but the bad actions of a lot of them over the years created a huge distrust of cabs in general. Getting long-hauled was such a legendary ripoff that it's been listed as a warning for years by those giving Vegas advice. Taking the tunnel from the airport or going via I-15 to a hotel on the Strip were the usual indicators you might be getting cheated. Cabs lost business to the ride-sharing companies that came along and quickly became popular with their modern ride-ordering technology, upfront prices, cleaner cars and a better reputation for customer service. The taxi companies brought this upon themselves by their bad practices and failure to adapt, it's hard to feel sympathy for them. So now cabs want to be fair to passengers, but only because they have to.

    Another Long-Haul Story
I was long-hauled from the Palazzo to Caesar's one fine day. I was so mad that I turned the cab driver in and eventually got a full refund of the fare from the driver. Silly driver thought he could fool a woman riding by herself!

    What about downtown
They need to do the same thing for downtown.

    Still too high
Center City Philadelphia is roughly 9 miles from PHL. A fare from the airport to the Center City Zone is $28.50. The Sahara is 5 miles from LAS up Paradise Rd. and costs $27. Taxis in Vegas are ridiculously overpriced, no wonder Uber and Lyft have done so well in Vegas.

    rent a car already
For the cost of two cab rides (airport-Strip and back), you can rent a compact car for two days, even with all the ridiculous extra gouge fees and taxes. You'll have a car to visit other places besides your hotel. Of course, you'd have to stay someplace that doesn't charge for parking. Yet another reason to stay off the Strip!

    Getting fares reduced
It's a frustrating waste of time to wait for decades for "somebody" to "do something about it". If you want to change something, either complain to your state congressperson and have him/her submit a bill that will put desirable limits on cab fees, or get a referendum set up so that the populace will vote on it. You have to take decisive action if you want something to change.
