Question of the Day - 05 April 2019

Q:

I just read Jeffrey Compton’s blog entry about McCarran Airport. He referred to Terminals 1 & 3 and said it’s a long story why there’s no Terminal 2. So what’s the story?

A:

Well, it’s not that long a story.

Terminals 1 and  2 serviced McCarran International between 1963 and 2012, when Terminal 3 was completed. Terminal 3 was built from scratch at a cost of $2.4 billion over a period of more than 10 years. It remains one of the largest public-works projects in Nevada history.

As soon as the sleek new 14-gate Terminal 3 opened, Terminal 2, which had been home to international (and charter) arrivals and departures, was rendered obsolete and closed. Actually, it was considered obsolete long before Terminal 3 opened, too dilapidated to be upgraded for further use as a concourse.

Terminal 2 was finally demolished in 2016. A new terminal building might be built on that site someday, although there are currently no plans that we know of to do so. Still, if a new terminal building is ever built there, logic would probably dictate that it be named Terminal 2.

    Name of new terminal
If a new terminal were built in the future on the site where Terminal 2 was located, logic would dictate that it should be named Terminal 4, because it was built later than Terminal 3. Naming it Terminal 2 would be inappropriate because it would not be older than Terminal 3.
