Question of the Day - 07 January 2026

Q:

Are tours to the Nevada Test Site still available and if so, what's the best way to get a spot?

A:

Currently, tours of the Nevada National Security Site (NNSS) are paused until March at the earliest. This is due to the uncertainty of funding and the ongoing evaluations of the federal budget by the administration.

Our understanding is that the NNSS will re-evaluate the tour program once the budget situation becomes a little clearer and the Security Site can better assess its financial position vis-a-vis its operational needs.

Assuming the tours resume, securing a spot is a matter of impeccable timing. You have to register and sign up for a space far far far in advance. When they run, the tours take place once a month and there’s enormous interest in them, so they fill up fast fast fast. In the past, the NNSS released dates in October or November for the 12 tours in the following calendar year. Only by monitoring the tour site on a daily basis would you know when the spots on the buses were released. If you missed it, you were out of luck. You could put your name on a cancellation list, but you’d have to be prepared to fly in at short notice.

Now, with the tours paused for at least the next couple of months, it's anyone's guess when or even if they'll open up again.

While that wasn't on my list of concerns, this was very good information for anyone even thinking about it. Thanks again, LVA.

    Was pretty cool, I guess
Wife and I did this 5 or 6 years ago. It was cool, but be ready for a LOT of time on the bus. I remember getting off the bus four times, and two of them was at the cafe when entering the town of Mercury. We got off at a spot where it was set up for an underground test shot, and got off at the Sudan crater. The rest is on the bus.

    A radiation vacation destination
It used to be that you could get a personal guided tour just by showing them the third eye that had grown in the back of your head or the antlers you had sprouted, but everyone who went there to watch the big booms go off has long ago died of cancer.

    Why not conduct more tours
If the tours are so popular, why do they do the tour once a month? Why don’t they conduct tours at least once a week?

    Why bother
Why bother with going to the test site when you can immerse yourself in toxic waste just by going anywhere on the Strip?
