Question of the Day - 16 November 2020

Q:

We might or might not drive in for Thanksgiving. We got a great room rate at the Plaza, but we're wondering if any of the restaurants will be serving a holiday meal, what with social distancing and all. And do you think it will be crowded?

A:

A recent survey shows that only one out of four Americans will travel over Thanksgiving, so we're not surprised you got a good room rate for a traditionally high-cost weekend.

In the meantime, however, plenty of restaurants here will be serving a traditional turkey dinner on Thursday the 26th. The Plaza, for example, is offering a choice of a $49-per-person dinner (a la carte) or $65 for the three-course deal, with butternut soup, turkey, potato, stuffing, gravy, and vegetable (dessert extra).

Here's a list of casino eateries with the per-person prices (either fixed or average a la carte); figure on some combination of turkey, stuffing, gravy, sweet/regular potatoes, vegetable, cranberry sauce, and dessert. If you have a favorite locals restaurant, be sure to call and inquire; reservations might be tough with a lot of Las Vegans wanting to go out, but not to a casino.

Aliante: MRKT, $52

Bellagio: Spago, $74; Picasso, $168

Boulder Station: Guadalajara, $16; Broiler $55

Caesars: The Palm, $59

California: Market Street Cafe, $15

Cosmopolitan: STK, $69

Downtown Grand: Triple George, $55

Encore: Jardin, $61

Fremont: Tony Roma's, $17

Gold Coast: Cornerstone, $32

Golden Nugget: Vic & Anthony's, $65

Harrah's: Ruth's Chris, $98

JW Marriot: Hawthorn Grill, $75

Mandalay Bay: Stripsteak, $90

MGM Grand: Emeril's Fish House, $60

New York-New York: Nine Fine Irishmen, $39

Orleans: Prime Rib Loft, $36

Palace Station: Charcoal Room, $55

Palazzo: Lavo, $59

Paris: Eiffel Tower, $89

Red Rock: T-Bones, $88

Sahara: Bazaar Meat, $95

Sam's Town: Angry Butcher, $39

South Point: Don Vito's, $41

Suncoast: Du-par's, $20

Venetian: Smith & Wollensky, $69

Wynn: Sinatra, $85

    Thanksgiving
This would have been a great day to open more of the buffets! It has been long enough and what is Las Vegas without buffets? Obviously, if you are elderly with underlying conditions, you should take precautions, but many people want to get out and enjoy Las Vegas again. Also, people are not staying home; there has never been more traffic out there. Open the buffets!

    97 Options for Thanksgiving
    From Eater Las Vegas:
97 Options for Thanksgiving Dinner in Las Vegas and Henderson — 2020 Edition (includes eat in & take out)
    https://vegas.eater.com/maps/best-thanksgiving-restaurants-las-vegas-henderson-2020
If you're unfamiliar with how Eater does maps, you can scroll down and see options listed on the left, or click on the red map point and the description on the left will jump to that restaurant. So many red map points cluster on the strip that you have to zoom in to get them to separate :)

    Buffet at South Point
Fortunately, there is a buffet option this Thanksgiving. The Buffet at the South Point casino has been open for several months now, and will be open for both Thanksgiving and Christmas this year. Hopefully, the rest of the buffets will start to follow South Point's lead, as they've shown how it can be done. It's just like the traditional buffets, but servers spoon your selections on to your plate for you, instead of you doing it yourself. Our casino visitions are now way down or nonexistant with most of the buffets shuttered. Come on, Vegas! Open the buffets!

    Buffets are done
Not only will they not reopen for Thanksgiving....most of them will never reopen. The days of buffets in Las Vegas are over.

    Turkey bucks
I wonder...will the turkey at Picasso ($168) be ten times as good as the turkey at Tony Roma's ($17)?

There's another choice that wasn't mentioned--Emerald Island's cafe will be open 24/7 and will serve a complete dinner for $11.99. I had it last year--it was excellent! Anyone who's eaten there knows that the food is terrific AND cheap.

    Emerald Island
Thank you, Kevin Lewis, for mentioning Emerald Island. It's one of my favorites. The restaurant there is terrific: excellent food, more than reasonable prices, and accommodating wait staff. In fact, that whole little casino is a jewel (albeit a somewhat smoky one). However, the restaurant is a stand-out. I never visit LV w/o getting to Emerald Island at least a couple of times, mainly to eat. The Sunday brunch, the daily specials....and the regular menu (try the burger combo) make it worthwhile. I'm really missing my big trips to LV this year.

    Another Eater list
Eater Las Vegas came out with another list, this one for casual Thanksgiving options: https://vegas.eater.com/maps/best-casual-thanksgiving-dishes-las-vegas

One they don't list is Capriotti's, which has locations all over Vegas but their website doesn't say whether they will be open that day. Their Bobbie sandwich is "Thanksgiving on a bun": https://www.capriottis.com/
