Question of the Day - 21 August 2020

Q:

What guidance do you have on tipping for various services? From the valet (coming and going), bellman, maids for rooms, check-in hosts, slot (or video) attendants for hand-pay jackpots, folks who seat you at shows, taxi drivers from airport, bartenders, drink ladies while gambling (usually a $1 per drink, I do), concierge, any other folks I may be missing, etc.

And at the bottom of the page is your link to the results of the smoking-in-casinos poll.

A:

Is that all?

We can get you most of the way there, but not in this answer. Instead, we have an entire section devoted to tipping in our FAQ: shuttle drivers, Uber/Lyft drivers, limo drivers, bellmen, front-desk clerks, housekeepers, room service wait staff, buffet servers (pre-pandemic), cocktail waitresses, casino hosts, slot floor people, valet parking attendants, and airport curbside-check-in porters.

We don't, it seems, address showrooms (though reserved seating in most of them these days, when they're open, has eliminated the "survival of the tippest" usher issues). Nor do we have an FAQ for bartenders or concierges. Perhaps readers can weigh in on those three, so that we can turn them into FAQs.

On the plus side, in the Tipping section, we also have posts on record-setting tips, tipping controversies, the etymology of the term "George," tipping etiquette on comped meals, and tipping with casino chips and TITO vouchers.

As for dealers, that's a whole separate category and we've covered that in various QoDs. The most recent and comprehensive answer was in the one on 8/13/19, in which we delved into the issues surrounding tipping dealers and asked for feedback; we received 20 comments that ran the gamut.

So you'll have to do a little clicking around the website to get all your answers, but other than bartenders and concierges, you'll find them here.

By the way, the FAQ have all kinds of interesting information. They're sort of buried, but on the top navigation menu, hover over Top Features and you'll see them.

And here's your link to the results of the previous poll on smoking in casinos.

    Read all about it
Tipping is one of the most-written about things there is, all someone has to do is google search and start reading. The LVA website and endless other sources have recommendations and discussions. It comes down to personal choice, do you reward someone for a service they provide for you. Think about what you'd expect to receive for doing that same service for someone else.

    tipping now
In general, in places that had been closed and/or have limited capacity, (mostly restaurants here), I have raised my tipping. I figure that people who must rely on tips to make a living wage are still getting less tips once their jobs re-open, so if I can add a little extra it might help.

    Teppanyaki Grills
I have always wondered about the proper etiquette is for Teppanyaki grills. I usually give the Chef/Cook $5.00 to $10.00 depending on the number of people in our group and 10% for the server (on the bill).

    slot attendant
2 percent is standard for hand pays. As someone who worked as a slot attendant for 7 years. The guide says .5 to 2 percent, but the overwhelming majority of regular players give 2 percent (a $20 bill for a $1000 jackpot).
