Question of the Day - 21 September 2025

Q:

Here's a tipping etiquette question. I just signed up for "fast pay." When a hand-pay is triggered, instead of waiting for someone to reset the machine and pay you, all you do is enter your players card PIN and the credits roll onto the screen. You're then supposed to visit the slot club or cashier to pick up your W2-G, but some places hand deliver the W2-G to you. Am I supposed to tip the folks who give me a W2-G?

A:

Good question. We don't know if there's any established etiquette for such a new and specialized service; if there is and anyone knows about it, please fill us all in.

We can tell what we'd do: Tip the W-2G runner $5. As always, cash makes the casino world go round and anyone who delivers something to us therein will be included in that long tradition. We certainly wouldn't toke a percentage of the jackpot, as we would if the deliverer brought us cash and the tax form and reset the machine after a jackpot, but we would duke off a standard amount, not unlike a cocktail tip.

That's us. What would you'ens do? Let us know in the comments.

    Labor
Does this eliminate any worker job in the process, like bagging your own groceries? A fin sounds good to me . I’ve only heard the word duke used in Chicago. Any idea where it comes from. I searched duke/gratuity with only Duke university responses.

    Never heard of this
Does the runner also bring the cash and re-set the machine? Does the runner check ID to be sure he/she is handing the W-2G to the right person? What if I forgot and moved to another machine before the runner arrived? Or forgot and left the casino, as implausable as that sounds (blame the ETOH)?! Is the jackpot amount added to the player's balance on the screen to be cashed out in a TITO?

Anyway, $5 sounds adequate for the service, maybe even $2 or $3. It would save me money, since I often tip from the cash delivered, and usually more than $5.

    W2g
You can elect to have the w2g emailed to you.
So no slot attendant is necessary.
Hit the jackpot then just type in your pin and continue playing.

    %
I normally give them 2.5% of my winnings. It means more to them than it does to me

I wonder if the same deal works for Canadians... Hit reset and vamanos before someone comes to take the 30% and give you the 1040 form... Naw, the machine would just lock up, I'm sure.

The runner just brings the W2G, as the money goes automatically onto the machine. I've seen this on a few of the videos by slot influencers and wondered how they were able to do this. Now we know.

As for the tip, I might actually tip $5-$20 depending on the size of my jackpot. It was a lot easier to tip them more when you were getting the actual hand pay and had $100s.

I'll have to check with the casinos I frequent if they have this system. Great QOD

    Opt-in
You have to opt-in to the FastPay program. If you are not interested game play works as usual. On my last trip the players card reader display said the program was being offered at El Cortez. After my first hand-pay, I asked to sign up. You have to sign a form. They make it very clear that YOU are responsible for collecting your W2-Gs. I had an opportunity to use the feature 2 times. The machine locks-up when the hand pay is triggered just as usual (music and all the banners), but the players card reader brings up a keypad to enter your PIN. Once you do this, the credits roll onto the machine and play continues. Several minutes later a slot attendant came by with my W2-G ready to sign. Easy-peasy. At the time I did not think to tip as this was uncharted territory. Next time I will know better.

    RE: DonzackSep
Does this eliminate jobs? Possibly, but not nearly as many as TiTo did. At some places I have waited 20-30 minutes to get paid out. That's annoying. This program is a win for the casino and the player. I miss the days of the $ carousel ladies and change people roving the floor, but those days are gone forever.

Sounds like tipping the bearer of bad news.
Bringing the cash is a positive thing. The W2G not so much since it indicates a tax liability… ;)
