Question of the Day - 29 June 2024

Q:

In your QoD on golf courses and water use, you ended with a statement, "Of the top 10 commercial water users in the Las Vegas Water District, none is a golf course. All 10 are casinos." I'm sorry, but that's actually hard to believe. Can you list the top 10 and the amount of water they use?

A:

Happy to.

But first, it's perhaps not so hard to believe that casinos use more water than golf courses. In fact, the casinos account for 40 of the top 50 commercial water users in the Las Vegas Valley Water District, at least they did in 2023. Artificial lakes and fountains, canals, huge swimming pools and water parks, not to mention upwards of 150,000 toilets flushing and showers running daily, drinking water, and on and on all contribute to inevitably high usage.

That said, casinos use only six percent of southern Nevada's total water outlay and most of it is returned to Lake Mead. That's because much of the non-potable water is recycled and the indoor water -- all the flushes and faucets -- are processed through the water reclamation plant and piped back to the big reservoir.

Anyway, to answer your question, here are the top 10 water users in southern Nevada with the number of annual gallons (in the millions) they consumed in 2023:

Venetian/515 million

Mandalay Bay 507

Caesars Palace/480

MGM Grand/382

Bellagio/364

Cosmopolitan/351

CityCenter/328

Wynn/310

Luxor/270

Mirage/268
