Question of the Day - 18 July 2024

Q:

Why doesn’t LVA tout TI more? Free parking, hotel offers that waive the dreaded resort fees, generally reasonable table minimums, especially for the Strip, and a good location.

A:

You're right. We should -- for all the reasons you list and then some.

But it's not like we ignore Treasure Island. We devoted an entire issue to the joint in January 2018 after spending a weekend there. We wrote, “Though it’s often overlooked and under-reviewed, the TI is a fine place to stay and play and relatively inexpensive for a Steve Wynn-built hotel-casino right in the heart of the action.”

And that's still true, more than six years later, especially considering that parking is, and always has been, free.

As for the parking, on our YouTube videos, Andrew on occasion mentions stashing his car there to access the center Strip. He doesn't, to be sure, take advantage of the situation, always making a point of giving TI some play before moving on to further destinations. We're certain that some people do take advantage, but we don't endorse that; if the free parking is abused, it could go away.

We also tried the new restaurant, Yacht Club, shortly after it opened late last year and reviewed it in LVA 1/24, giving it two thumbs up. The Littleneck clams were excellent and just thinking about them makes us want to return; the cioppino was recommendable as well. Prices aren't exorbitant, either, like most center Strip locations.

Otherwise, TI doesn't change much, which doesn't give us much to go on in terms of touting it. But overall, we do when an opportunity presents itself -- this question, for example!

    Fond Memory
Whenever I hear "Treasure Island" I remember the time I won $3,610 on a 25¢ progressive Video Poker machine in their casino, early in the morning of May 10, 1994. (Good grief, that was THIRTY years ago!)

    Mystere
Mystere(at TI) was one of the first, if not the first, of the Cirque shows in Las Vegas. To me it remains the best of them, but perhaps my opinion is influenced by it being the first one I saw. I hadn't seen anything like it before.

    Phil Ruffin
How about a question of the day with a background on Phil Ruffin the Kansas guy that has managed to buy a Las Vegas casino Treasure Island. What had to happen for this outsider to purchase this casino? And I understand that he is a personal friend of Donald Trump. Does he also own part of Trump hotel on the Strip?

I miss the free pirate show!!!
That used to be a “go to” free show every trip (like the Bellagio fountains still are). I also second what was mentioned above: Mystere was my 1st Cirq show and thoroughly enjoyed it.

    Pirate Show
There was a restaurant that had a big window that overlooked the Pirate Show. Using a tip from, IIRC, the LVA, I got there about 45 minutes early and nailed the best seat in the house. If that window hadn’t been there, I swear that I could have reached out and touched one of the ships. The show, of course, was excellent!

That night, three British sailors were sitting at the table behind me. They were, as they say, feeling no pain. When the pirates sank the British ship, the sailors stood and belted out a rousing rendition of Hail, Britannia! Hilarious!
