Question of the Day - 06 May 2022

Q:

What`s with the triple 0 roulette wheels? Why would anyone play them instead of the double 0 wheels?

A:

We get this question so often that it strikes us as being even more of a casino loathing than 6-5 blackjack and 6/5 Jacks or Better.

The first appearance of triple-zero was at the Venetian in October 2016. They introduced one table, giving it a $10 minimum, compared to the $15 minimum for double-zero. A lot like 6-5 blackjack on lower-limit or single- and double-deck games, it seemed to be the cost of the lower table minimum — bets for $5 less, though a 2.43% worse house advantage (the third green zero raises the casino advantage from 5.26% to 7.69%).

It was still the only triple-zero roulette game in Vegas, and perhaps the world, six months later. At that time, the minimum bet had gone up to $15 and there was a double-zero game with the same $15 minimum right next to it. When we were there right after the juxtaposition of the tables, the triple-zero game had three players and the standard game had two.

Since then,  Planet Hollywood, New York-New York, and Resorts World have joined the roulette gouge, that we know of, and probably others as well.

As for the Venetian, the last time we checked, two triple-zeroes were in action and no double zeroes. Why should they offer double-zero? Both triple-zero tables were busy.

And that, as always when it comes to ignorance of the different house advantages for casino games, is the answer to your "why." When players are that oblivious, why shouldn't the casino offer triple zero? Those of us in the know are aware that it's the ripoff variation. As for the rest, it's the casino variation: A sucker and his money are soon parted.

    Mathematically…
Playing the minimum of $10 per spin on a triple zero game is *slightly* better for the player than $15 per spin on a double zero game.

The problem is, nobody plays the minimums.

And even if they did, those minimums are long gone.

    Backwards
I meant to say $15 on triple zero is slightly better than $10 on double zero.

I had it right the first time. 😵‍💫

    Ignorance
People play it for the same reason they play 6/5 blackjack or stay on the strip.

  • JimBeam May-06-2022
    This is why
"People play where they stay". That has been a saying in the gaming business since the beginning of time. The reason people play these terrible game is convenience. The game is there and they can play with all those "free" drinks before stumbling up to their room at 2AM.

    Knowledge
I suspect the vast majority of roulette players don't even know that games exist with different numbers of zeros. They know there are games called "roulette", "blackjack", and "video poker" and have no idea what the odds, payouts, etc. really are. Most are probably casual gamblers who rarely play and in their busy lives haven't prioritized learning about the games. They have a small bankroll that they play until it is gone, or if really lucky hit a nice payout or two.

Now anyone who plays seriously should absolutely take the time to learn the games, but I certainly wouldn't criticize the casual players who don't. Most likely they are experts at things that folks on this board know nothing about.

Of course, you can't forget the "green" players who see the game as increasing their chances to win! (Hey, I have three possible winning numbers instead of just two!)

    I played it
Played a table with a funky looking symbol above the zeros. Didn’t think much of it until it hit and I realized it was a 000 table . Cashed in my chips after that spin.

    Cost of Play
JimBeam hit this one on the nose. My 88yr old father won't sit down at a $25 BJ table despite being able to afford it and fully understanding the math. If the only other low limit games are 6/5 with auto shufflers the inconvenience of moving to another casino often out weighs the mental anguish of the crappy odds.

The energy needed to move from the casino we are in to a another location with better games especially late at night with an 88 year old man can not be understated. Getting to the Valet stand can be an event in itself.

I am not a roulette player but taking away the double 0' games is a brilliant move on behalf of the casino.

Penny games are another physiological game. You take the mom/pop stay in my motor home player who would never play 3 x 0.25c and put them on a 0.01 slot with 20 lines and 10 coins per line and they are happy to play $2.00/spin and not even notice. If you play less than minimums that's a sucker bet all by itself.

    Casino War at Wynn
December's trip to Vegas, I was in shock to see how loud and popular the Casino War game, at the Wynn was. This is the same game shown in Vegas Vacation, at the WYNN no less. Talk about life, imitating art!

    more math
not to be a stickler, but the piece massively understates the increase in the house advantage. While going to triple-zero yields a 2.43 percentage point increase for the house advantage, that's actually a whopping 46% increase over the 5.26% casino advantage for double-zero.

    The real question is...
Why would anyone go to Vegas nowadays when they could just hit themselves on the head with a hammer until they fall unconscious and wake up in the emergency room, thereby saving thousands of dollars and several days?

EVERYTHING in Vegas is triple-zero now. That should be on that iconic fucking sign.

    Because...
You're 50% more likely to win if you bet on green! Never mind that the odds are reduced from a double-zero wheel (since it is now a 3-number bet, which pays 11-1, instead of a 2-number bet, which pays 17-1), so the house edge is still increased by 50% - it's a better chance of winning! (It reminds me of when the California Lottery advertised that "there are now more chances to win $1 Million on the Big Spin wheel," leaving out the fact that they removed the larger values to do it.)

I have a feeling the correct answer is going to be, for the same reason people play 6-5 blackjack - it's the only game in town. "Besides, it doesn't matter how many green numbers there are; I've got this great system - bet $5 on red; if you lose, keep doubling the bet until you eventually win, at which point, you will have made a $5 profit. Sure, there's a chance that you'll lose 10 in a row and run up against a $5000 betting limit, but the chances of that happening on a triple-zero wheel are 1 in 488!"

    Plaza
Stayed at the Plaza 2 weeks ago (very nice BTW) played on the single 0 15$ min. Double 0 was busier, 10$ minimum even the dealer couldn't see why.

    Stratosphere for Single Zero?
I believe the Strat used to have a single 0 table at one point. Does anyone know if that is still true? I don't play roulette and haven't been there for years.

  • rokgpsman May-06-2022
    Strat has triple zero roulette
Website for the Stratosphere (now The Strat) says their roulette wheel has numbers 1 to 36, plus 0,00 and 000. They seem to be bragging about it, as if it's the latest and greatest update to an old game. Spin marketing (pun intended).
