Question of the Day - 09 August 2019

Q:

I’m a truck driver and am curious about parking for big trucks at Strip casinos or local spots. Do they offer it and is it paid parking?

A:

There are very few surface parking lots left on the Strip and only one we know of has tractor-trailer parking: Circus Circus in the lot off Industrial next to Adventuredome. According to a recent trucker's forum entry, you have to be a guest to park your rig there, but it's free.

We know of no paid parking for semis on or near the Strip. Other than the Circus free lot, all the truck parking is off-Strip.

The closest is Wild Wild West, where as far as we know you don't have to be a guest to park. And In N Out is right across the street.

The best truck parking, according to the forums, is at the Orleans: long pull-throughs, fenced, with security; the NASCAR haulers are known to stay there when they're not out at the Speedway.

You'll also find truck parking at the Gold Coast (along Valley View), the Rio (enter at the huge lot behind the casino via Twain), Palace Station, and Silverton.

It's best to be a guest at these.

From all but Silverton, it's a $5-$8 Uber to the Strip. The Wild Wild West, Rio, and Gold Coast are easily walkable and the Orleans and Gold Coast have a free shuttle to the Fashion Show Mall for guests.

In the meantime, watch for Kojak with a Kodak and stack them eights, ten-four.

Also, as you can see below, we acquired a postcard of Caesars Palace in the early '70s in order to show more clearly the lot that Steve Wynn sold back to Caesars as elucidated in yesterday's QoD and requested by VegasVic1414. Our old contact Don, who lived in Vegas in the '70s and '80s and has a sizable collection of memorabilia from that time, sent it in (thank you, Don!). You can see the Strip in the lower right and Flamingo in the lower left; at that corner of the parking lot, across Flamingo from the Dunes and across the Strip from the Flamingo, was where Steve Wynn bluffed about putting his Gangland motel-casino and newsstand.

Was the little corner of parking lot worth the $2.25 million Caesars shelled out for it? You make the call.

    Mesquite
Mesquite has a large lot next to the I-15 across the street from both the Eureka and Virgin River hotel/casinos, and a couple new truck stops just a couple miles away in both directions.

This in via email from Jeannine
Love that pic of the old Caesars, with Industrial in the background. That used to be our quick and easy way to go south and miss the traffic. Wynn's old ruse worked well for him, which proves his prowess as a businessman. I love these historical pics showing the area years ago and would like to see more. Wide open spaces! Thanks!

    Thanks, Jim ...
... for the update on the Orleans-Gold Coast shuttle. We missed that one somewhere along the way. This answer is updated and so is our shuttle listings. Much appreciated.

    South Point
They have a huge surface parking lot, and I always see trucks and RVs parked in the northeast corner. It's technically on the Strip, and it's easy to get to the Strip casinos, either by cab or plain old bus bus, which runs more often than any other Vegas route.

Re Wynn's little scam, it's interesting just how many Vegas casino developers got their start from that sort of modest blackmail--acquiring parcels of land that would probably be wanted in the future by an existing megacasino. One guy I know made a small fortune by acquiring a bunch of vacant lots on outer Rancho (for virtually nothing) as soon as a friend clued him in that the Santa Fe casino (eventually assimilated by StationsBorg) was approved and would be breaking ground. And his Wynnness coughed up what was it, half a million? for the rights to the name "Mirage," when he learned that a ramshackle motel on the south Strip had that name. They turned down his initial offer of $20,000. And he didn't even have them whacked!

    Somebody Beat me
I was all set to recommend the Orleans / Gold Coast Shuttle. but Jim beat me to it. We love to gamble at both places ( Boyd properties - my favorite)and the free shuttle to the strip is a cinch It runs about every 1/2 hour and we leave a couple bucks tip and everybody's happy. The drivers are great in that traffic, even on holidays and rush hour. Leprechaun

    New Resort Fees
MGM has been at the front in resort fees, and they anounced a new increase in these "resort fees". Is there any governing body that regulates resort fees?, It's geting rediculous, it's going to be so that you will pay more in fees than the room itself. Personaly I don't stay at MGM resorts any more because of the fees and the parking situation, and prefrebly staying at locals hotels that charge much less and offer free parking, and I found out they care more about customer service than the "big companies" like MGM.
