Do you think Trump International in Las Vegas will ever open a casino? If not, why not? Wouldn't it be a huge hit with his base?
We get this question from time to time; we last answered it a couple of years ago.
As for a Trump casino appealing to the ex-president's political base, that's a question better left to Wall Street analysts, social-media commentators, marketing gurus, political pundits, TV talking heads, and the like.
As for why we believe that a casino won't be opening at Trump International anytime soon, it's not, at least currently, because of any licensing issues; Donald Trump previously held a Nevada gaming license when he owned 10% of the Riviera.
Of course, if he loses even one of the many lawsuits circulating around him (civil suits stemming from his pre-presidential business dealings, defamation claims from women he allegedly assaulted, and criminal investigations vis-a-vis his attempts to overturn the results of the 2020 election, for example), the Nevada gaming regulators might take a closer look at his suitability as a license holder.
Among the reasons a casino didn't open when Trump International did, Eric Trump explained at the time, "We wanted a true luxury-resort experience. It's hard to have a high-quality product when you walk into ‘ding, ding, ding’ and people are walking around in Hawaiian shirts with big plastic drink mugs.”
That said, in February 2016, Donald Trump announced that he and his friend and partner in Trump International, Phil Ruffin, were planning build a $100 million casino on the pad previously reserved for the originally planned second condo tower.
Again at the time, Eric Trump put the onus on Ruffin to move forward with the project, since his father was busy on the presidential campaign. Still, he told the Wall Street Journal that if Ruffin took the initiative, "We would certainly do it."
The plan called for the casino to occupy four acres next to the tower and would have been half-owned by Trump. But it never proceeded beyond the announcement stage; in fact, it went down the memory hole almost as soon as it saw the light of day.
Given the Trump Organization's track record in the casino business, we suspect Phil Ruffin would have to acquire 100% of the property for a casino to be built there.
