Question of the Day - 17 October 2020

Q:

Does the city of Las Vegas have a rental program where you can rent bicycle scooters downtown?

A:

It certainly does.

In 2016, the city launched its bike-share program by introducing 180 regular pedal-powered bikes available from 21 rental stations around downtown. You pay online or via a kiosk at the station with a credit card or cell phone, then grab a bike, ride to where you're going, and return the bike to one of the stations. Back then, the cost was $4 for 30 minutes, $8 for 24 hours, and $20 for a month.

That same year, the Regional Transportation Commission did a two-week trial run with electric bikes, adding five e-bikes powered by a front-wheel pedal-assist motor that can go as fast as 17 miles per hour. The trial run was so successful that the RTC added more and more e-bikes to the fleet until now, the 200-vehicle fleet is a mix of regular bikes (still the majority) and e-bikes, which according to the RTC are two and a half times more popular.

The bright green electric bikes cost an additional $1 per checkout when you the pay for one of the three options (for either type bike): 24 hours ($5), 3 days ($10), or monthly ($15).

Interestingly, since the shutdown in March, bike-shares have increased 300% year over year; in May alone, an average of 1,000 bikes per day were rented. Users can locate e-bikes in advance on the RTC Bike Share website map or the BCycle app; a lightning-bolt symbol indicates that at least one e-bike is at a particular station.

    Bikes
Strange. I have stayed downtown for decades. I have only seen a rare bike on the main drag. The rare one did not run over any people. You don’t know who is using motor bikes on the strip to come in quickly cause trouble then leave. If you watch news on riots Etc. you can figure it out. They are certainly more common after the lockdown. By coincidence you have increased crime On the strip. Much is not reported for obvious reasons. Do they need !! Scooters ? Most people enjoy the scenery not cause trouble. I think everyone knows what I mean. One Utuber label strip as police state. They have never seen this. Don’t blame on psychological effect of corona.

    Biking in LV
I am a road cyclist. I drive to LV with my bike in the back of the truck, and done some really nice riding on the River Mountains Loop Trail, Red Rock Canyon, and on the newer streets in Henderson and Summerlin which were built with bike lanes. There are also multi-use paths along parts of the 215 which are good for cycling.

That said, it would seem like a death wish to rent a bicycle downtown or anywhere near the tourist areas. Where streets do not have bike lanes, drivers are lost or drunk or distracted, and so on.

These urban bike programs are usually paid for with federal money tied to other programs. No thanks.
