Question of the Day - 06 February 2023

Q:

Were there two bellmen who recently celebrated 50 years of service each at the Las Vegas Hilton?

A:

Yes. Most of their employment was when the hotel was called the Las Vegas Hilton, though they both started working there when it was called the International. And they still work there now that it's called Westgate Las Vegas. Both, as far as we know, are still "pumping vinyl" to this day, with no plans to retire. Among their many friends and admirers is the president of the resort, who started as a front-desk clerk.

Alonzo Langstaff, 72, started at the resort on Oct. 12, 1971, while his close friend and fellow bellman Earl Manson started two days later on Oct. 14. So they celebrated 50 years two Octobers ago.

A story in the Las Vegas Sun in October 2021 featured the pair, who "are so well-liked by customers that some repeat guests have been requesting one or the other to handle their bags for years."

For Langstaff, originally from Arkansas, and Manson, from Louisiana, the hotel has been their family all these decades. This is especially true for Manson, who's wife died in 1978 and who raised his three children as an adult dad -- with a lot of assistance from his co-workers. More than 60 employees worked at the property for at least 40 years at the time of the two bellmen's 50th anniversary.

    another one
We didn't go to LVH that often, but we recall the 'bellman' (guy who put us in the taxi) with the deep, deep voice. I'm recalling him as an older white man who certainly would have been retired, if not deceased by now. We would usually be heading back to Bellagio, and we enjoyed his deep deep voice instruction to the driver..."Bellagioooo."

We figured he was an LVH treasure and always hoped we'd encounter him again.

    Old Timers
Yeah, I stayed at the then LVH prior to the renaming to Westgate and there are quite a few old timers working there that probably started when Elvis still played there when it was the International. This is one property that has a lot of loyal employees and surprisingly with the turnover of owners, the companies have also been loyal to them. Not going to find that just anywhere with today's corporations, it's all about cost reduction and profit.

    In Vegas? Sounds kinky.
