Question of the Day - 05 March 2019

Q:

In your expert opinion or opinions, what would you say are the five best steakhouses in Las Vegas?

A:

There's no more expert opinion on Las Vegas steakhouses (and fine dining in general) than John Curtas, author of our Eating Las Vegas, now in its seventh edition.

His picks for the top five are: Bazaar Meat (Jose Andres, SLS), Cut (Wolfgang Puck, Palazzo), Delmonico (Emeril Lagasse, Venetian), Prime (Jean-Georges Vongerichten, Bellagio), and Gordon Ramsay Steak (Paris).

And here's a bonus for you. The other five in John's top 10 are: MB Steak (Hard Rock), Strip House (Planet Hollywood), Charlie Palmer Steak (Four Seasons), Oscar's Steakhouse (Plaza), and Hank's Fine Steaks (Green Valley Ranch).

    THE Steakhouse
The Steakhouse at Circus Circus deserves to be on the list. It is the top rated Vegas steakhouse for like 30 years.

    Oscar's?
I'm skeptical of several of these choices, but I'm willing to accept that tastes differ. But Oscar's Steakhouse is NOT Top 5, Top 10, or even Top 20. The view is great. The service is mediocre. The food is below average.

Wow what a butt kissing answer. Looks to me like John is trying to keep the big names on the strip happy so he gets his prime seating.
CC Steakhouse, Golden Steer not on the list??

    steaks
I would be more interested in the best steakhouses for the money. Not cheap ones...but best bang for your buck.

    LV Steaks
I'm going to throw Twin Creeks at Silverton on here. I love that joint. The service is always great and they have some excellent steaks. Never had a bad time there and we go practically every time we visit. The bourbon selection is pretty good too.

    Vote Topic
This is a great QOD, I hope you'll consider making it a poll question. I'd be interested in seeing what the community votes as the Top 10 steakhouses in Vegas.

    Great idea
Anthony, thanks for the poll suggestion. We love those to begin with and as you say, this QoD is practically begging for it. We've got one in the queue (and tomorrow's the preview), but well definitely work on this one for after that one. I just checked the archives and it seems we've never done a steakhouse poll. You da man.

    Missing THE Best!
This list is woefully incomplete without Joe's Prime, inn the Forum Shops. Just had another AMAZING meal there last month, and it surely deserves TOP-10 status, if not TOP-5. I've been to six of the TOP-10 on your list, and none of those are better than Joe's!

What about Binions and "THE Steak House" at Circus Circus
Looks to me like "value" was not part of the equation for being declared the "best".

I have not been to any of the steakhouses listed and don't know their criteria for declaring them the "best" but having eaten at both Binion's and THE Steakhouse at Circus Circus, both are excellent and very reasonably priced (Though not cheap") for what you get. Throw in the LVA coupon on Binion's and its great Ribeye. and its unbeatable for the money.

    Poll & Value
I have to echo the comments by Wynne, Anthony and by implication, others. Yes, there should be a poll, and the poll should include value because personally, as much as I enjoy a good steak, overpaying just because it's sold by a big name kinda ruins the meal for me.

Understanding this is a subjective call
I haven't tried any of your top five, so I can't really comment on their inclusion. However for the next five, I agree with other posters that THE Steakhouse would have to be a consideration. Also: one of the best steakhouse meals I've had recently is at the Redwood (California downtown). When they upgraded the space as part of the overall refresh at the California, they also reworked the menu at Redwood. While before I thought it was a reasonable value but not a top tier offering, now I think it is a top tier offering at a VERY reasonable price. The quality of the steaks is improved, the preparation is significantly improved, the quality and preparation of the sides is hugely improved (a week point before). Overall I think this is one of the best steakhouse experiences I've had, and for the price it is really exceptional.

Andiamo's Italian Steakhouse @ The D Las Vegas
Andiamo's in the D belongs on the list. It is my favorite downtown Las Vegas.

  • Roy Furukawa Mar-05-2019
    Best?
I have been to Prime and Gordon Ramsay Steak and can attest to the food being excellent, but these are some of the priciest steaks in Las Vegas. A list of high end vs midrange steak or steakhouses would be good too. I see people saying Circus Circus steakhouse and I've had theirs too, but you do have to get past going into Circus Circus to get there, but it's a great value for the very good aged steak they serve.

    best steaks in LV
Just a country boy here from deep south Texas who doesn't get to LV too often but I met up with an old high school buddy at Ruth Chris steakhouse @ Harrah's and had the best time. Maybe it was just hooking up with my old buddy more than anything else but the NY strip was out of this world. Wasn't cheap but dang what a good piece of meat that was. Nice atmosphere, great service and the beer was good and cold to boot. Who's to say what's best except each and every one of us? Know what i mean jelly bean???

    Mini Residency
When this this become the official term for Playing Vegas. Back in the day you would see Elvis, Petula Clark, Ann Margaret, Tom Jones, Sammy, Dean Martin, Frank etc in neon on the strip, they were playing Vegas not "in mini residency"..... we need to give everything a special title.

    top 10 steaks
    Oscars needs work.
    Average at best

    Poll
Please do NOT do a poll asking what is the "BEST" steakhouse! Everyone's definition of what contributes to "BEST" is different. Someone might put service first or maybe the view first or maybe the price/value or maybe the wine list or maybe the sides or maybe the meat or maybe anything!!! I think you need to define it, but to me I'm interested in the best value for my money, so I would like the poll to ask about the best meat for the money! View, wine list, sides, even service are secondary to that for me at least!
