Whenever I visit Vegas, I make a point of driving by the Charleston/Fremont intersection so I can be blessed by the awesome Blue Angel. This time when I went, there’s an auto parts store being built on the property, and Blue Angel is, alas, finally gone. Where did she end up? Neon Boneyard?
The 61-year-old outlived the Blue Angel Motel by six years, but she was finally removed late last March.
The 16-foot-tall blonde in a blue evening dress with white wings and a halo was designed by Betty Willis, who also created the iconic Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas sign. The city Centennial Commission is funding the Blue Angel’s restoration, to the relief of many long-time locals and visitors, such as the submitter of this QoD, who would’ve hated to see the unofficial patron saint of downtown Las Vegas junked.
Once restored, the Angel will be displayed again on a triangular traffic median at the corner of Fremont Street and Charleston Boulevard. A specific date hasn’t been determined, but the city has said it will be sometime in the first half of 2018.
