With the recent passing of Jerry Lewis, I'm prompted to ask: I know Dean Martin has a street named after him here, but why is there no street named after Mr. Lewis?
Actually, there is.
Jerry Lewis Way runs from Dean Martin Drive (longest celebrity street in Vegas at 11 miles) to West Harmon Avenue (which probably wasn’t named after actor Mark Harmon or baseball player Harmon Killebrew). Jerry Lewis Way is barely a tenth of a mile long, but it’s a well-used shortcut for accessing the back entrance to the Cosmopolitan parking garage and for crossing the Strip between Flamingo and Tropicana.
Las Vegas likes to name its streets after celebrities who’ve graced its marquees.
Elvis finally got a street named after him late last year. Though it’s less than a half-mile long, Elvis Presley Boulevard is located in a prominent place between the Strip and Paradise Road (it used to be Riviera Boulevard).
Other well-known celebrity streets include Frank Sinatra Drive and Sammy Davis Jr. Drive, which meet up with Dean Martin Drive behind the Mirage. Nearby is Mel Torme Way.
Others include Wayne Newton Boulevard, Tony Bennett Way, Debbie Reynolds Drive, Jimmy Buffett Street, (Jimmy) Durante Street, Jerry Tarkanian Way, John Wayne Street, (Steve) Wynn Avenue, Roy Horn Way (but no Siegfried Fischbacher Boulevard), Howard Hughes Parkway, Arnold Palmer Way, even Calamity Jane Lane.
Twain Avenue probably isn’t named after Mark Twain and Jones Boulevard probably isn’t named after Tom, Tommy Lee, or Catherine Zeta.
Coincidental to this question, last month, long-time LVA correspondent “Bradwww” sent in the following observations about the celebrity streets.
“Jimmy Durante Blvd. seems to be in the shape of the comedian’s famous nose. Joe W. Brown Drive [named after the putative owner of Binion’s Horseshoe] must have been a drunk to warrant the crazy winding street near the Convention Center. Wayne Newton Boulevard will help swing you into Terminal 1 at the airport.
“And Sammy Davis Jr. Drive goes from downtown to uptown, then meets up with Frank Sinatra Drive. Frank's street goes under the freeway and comes out as Dean Martin Drive. Dean's street does a drunken sway past his namesake condos, partners up briefly with Jerry Lewis Way, and finally heads south to L.A., with Sinatra Drive straddling the other side of I-15.”
