Question of the Day - 30 June 2018

Q:

Any update on extending the Las Vegas Monorail to the airport and/or Mandalay Bay to serve Raiders Stadium?

A:

As a matter of fact, there is — for the MBay extension, though not the airport.

Seven months after the Clark County Commission approved extending the Las Vegas Monorail one mile from its existing southern terminus at MGM Grand down and across to Mandalay Bay, the Monorail company has applied for more than a dozen construction permits for the project.

Most cover the 70 reinforced-concrete piers that will support the track. One is for the new monorail station, the eighth on the line, planned to connect with the entrance to the Shoppes at Mandalay Place.

The permits disclose that the cost of the project will be $23.6 million. According to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, the Monorail company is looking to issue $110 million in bonds to pay for the extension project, make a $10 million debt payment due a year from now, and presumably cover operating expenses. Whether or not the financing is in place is unknown.

    Another bad location?
For me, as the Vegas Tourist, another badly located stop. I liked it better when it was free and ran between the 2 MGM Grands. How will this affect foot traffic in the "mall" and to the stadium?
