Question of the Day - 09 July 2024

Q:

I don’t mind paying for the LVA, although I haven’t been to Las Vegas since last summer and don’t plan to visit anytime soon. I still enjoy the newsletter. However, as a paid subscriber, I resent that I'm often unable to view the “Vegas News” section, because it's largely covered by a paid advertisement! I've emailed the LVA about this several times. Although they tried to help me, the last time I was told that it must be a glitch with my iPhone, which is where I read LasVegasAdvisor.com. Sooo my question is: Am I the only one with this problem? Please post this as a QoD. If no one else has this problem, I will just have to give up trying to read Vegas News. Of course, this would greatly reduce the value of the membership for me.

A:

Happy to oblige. Is Vegas News covered, in full or in part, on anyone else's iPhone by anything, particularly an ad?

And while we're at it, because we do hear from time to time from other subscribers having problems with accessing our site or particular pages and posts on it, we'd like to extend the question to all devices. Who has had a problem in the past, or is experiencing one currently, with connecting to our content on a cell phone, tablet, laptop, desktop, or any other electronic implement of the internet?

And if anyone has any suggestions as to why this member's Vegas News section is blocked by an advertisement, either on their end or ours, we'd appreciate hearing them.

I rarely look at vegas news. But on my pc it looks fine.

    Too wide
On my Samsung Galaxy android the news is too wide and I must thumb back and forth. I realize I could turn my phone sideways but I don't like doing that for reading.

    Settings
This problem happened all the time on my Android phone--until recently, and now I no longer experience it. I can't say that I did anything to solve it, since my phone updates automatically whether I like it or not. I've read that the percentage of the screen taken up by the ads is a function of the pop-up blocker settings on your phone. These settings, of course, will be different for each kind of phone and operating system.

So I suggest that you enable updates and/or update manually. The pop-up blockers have gotten more effective as of late, though I can't say how much so for Apple/IPhones (may the fleas of a thousand camels infest their undergarments).

A final desperation move would be to download some freeware that is intended to solve this sort of problem. Can't recommend any, though.

No issue on any of my Apple devices.

Same exact problem as the questioner
But on Android phone. And I'm sure IT knows why this is happening. Because they want it to (!). Paywall pages should NOT have obtrusive ads.

    DR
Most days I get sent to the web site for Trivago when I go to QOD. I just get out of the web site and reenter QOD. This brings me here.

    5 Devices
We use at least 5 different devices. No problems so far.

    Not formatted the same
The problem is that the news page does not follow the same page format as the other pages on the site. The column is much wider, causing the text to spill over the edges of the screen.

The QOD page, Stiffs and Georges, Top 10, etc. all appear to render correctly on mobile. This should be a simple fix for LVA to match the formatting of the news page to match all the others.

    Curiosity
I read QOD on my laptop and all is good, but out of curiosity, I pulled it up on my apple phone and it came up fine didn't even see an ad. My problem is how to read the LVA newsletter. My best results so far have been to download as if I were going to print it and read there.

    on Android
no problems with Qod or news on my Samsung, I use my tablet for the newsletter just cause it's easier.

    ME TOO!!
I also have an iPhone, and I too have this SAME, ANNOYING PROBLEM!! The news is partially covered by ads, so I can only read one line at a time. And I too, am a paid subscriber.

    Ads are present
I've never viewed LVA on my phone but I just did. There is a Google ad at the top and then at various points down the page. It doesn't cover up anything though. These same Google ads are also plastered all over the page when I read LVA on my desktop. Certain websites have them and LVA is one of them. Maybe they allow them to post? Not sure how that works.

    OK on iPhone 13
No ads blocking the news on an iPhone 13 running IOS 17.5. If I'm holding the phone in portrait mode though, I need to swipe left to see the right side of the news.

    Site Revamp
The LVA site is quite dated, and it does not optimize for the viewing platform - in addition to the regular categories of Phone, Tablet, and PC there are many nuances - like the Samsung Galaxy Fold that opens up for a wide screen, or the new smart flip phones with short screens. There are also many differences between the Safari (apple) browser on those devices as compared to Chrome/Edge which share a technology platform.

If LVA would like a quotation to rebuild the site please feel free to reach out.

    My ad is 25%
iPhone 15 Pro M as x user here. On the Vegas News page I get an initial banner ad at the top of the page that's about 25% of the screen. After that it's the news bullets. Although the text is wider than the screen is. So I have to scroll right and left in order to read each item that's annoying

    Vegas news
Yes, it is covered by a huge ad every month. I can read it but only the bottom line, so it takes a looong time to read the entire email. Very frustrating. I use an Apple phone as well.

    Works fine
    For me.

  • Edso Jul-09-2024
    Works fine
Never have issues on my Android, and for my PC I have the Ublock Ad Blocker, so I have no issues.

    Android
I don't usually view LVA News on my phone, but checked it out for this question. No ad issues, but I did have to scroll left and right to read it. No need to do so if I turned my phone sideways, however.

I do read QOD often on my phone without any issues.

    vendor issue
LVA, given you more than likely hire a vendor to host and program your website, this is something that should be tested thoroughly and fixed by them. The "glitch" you speak of is in the programming end of things. End users of a website shouldn't be called upon to be website software testers. It's standard protocol as you are paying for a service and a website's programming needs be compatible and function across a wide variety of platforms-devices, browsers, and OS's. If you have hobbyists programming your website, imho, one gets what they pay for.

As for ads popping up, for those who choose not to use a pop-up blocker, that's on the final user. But if the ads are popping up and covering content, back to the vendor for an easy program change if the ads are deemed to be too obtrusive by the source company, LVA.

    Maybe magnification?
I don't own either a smart phone or a tablet, so I can't try to view the LVA News on anything except a laptop; nor would I want to, because in my older age, I can't read tiny print. One thing that happens sometimes is that I get certain contents forwarded to me via email, and the far-right part of the content is hidden behind the vertical band on the right side of my email system (which usually contains ads). The forwarder had no idea why this was happening. So I tried to simply reduce the magnification (to shrink the text) and see if that would solve the problem, and it did; it reduced it from 100% to 90%. (If that still wasn't quite enough, we can reduce it even more, down to 80%, etc.) I don't know whether there is a "magnification" setting on smart phones, but if there is, perhaps you can try to reduce it and see if that changes things for the better.

    "Hard-wall" vs. "Soft-wall"
I'm no Web designer or otherwise an expert on Web constructs, and I don't know what all the proper terms are, but I've used the terms "hard-wall" and "soft-wall" to describe the 2 main ways that Web contents can be organized in either a fixed or unfixed way. An example of hard-wall structure would be if a Website or Web page is designed such that the rightmost 25% of the screen is allocated for ads, and the "wall" between it and the left 3/4 of the screen is "screwed into the ground" and will not budge, no matter what happens to the content in the left 3/4. An example of soft-wall structure would be that the dividing wall (and the rightmost 25% band) would move outwardly when magnification is increased, and thus the main content would wind up occupying the entire screen horizontally, which is what we all would like. Perhaps if the Web designer would use a form of soft-wall structure, this problem could be avoided.

    News
My news is always blocked with an add when I put my phone horizontal so that the text bigger. I now just keep my phone vertical & put on glasses

  • AL Jul-09-2024
    I'd like to see examples
It would be good, and resolve my curiosity, if the folks who have problems with this issue would send screen-shots of their problem to LVA, and LVA were to display them in a follow-up QoD, so that we all can see exactly what the problem looks like: where this problem occurs on the screen, how it does so, and how much of the screen gets obscured. If you are able to take a screen-shot of the problem via the device on which it occurs, great; if you can't, then have someone else use their smart phone to take a pic of your smart phone. Then send the pic to LVA, and after LVA displays the pics in a follow-up QoD, I and others can see exactly what the problem looks like.

    Like many here, too wide
I have no problem with the ads, but like many people here, I have to scroll Left and right as the text spills over the edges of my frame

    Vegas News
The Vegas News used to be on the main when I visited the site. In the most recent update to format (I think went it subscriber-only) I stopped seeing the Vegas News and I (ignorantly) thought that feature was discontinued. Thanks for bringing it to my attention that it still exists! I struggled for few minutes to locate it, perhaps because it’s not very intuitive how to get there but maybe that’s just me… To answer the original question - I see the articles on Safari (iPhone 15), but also have to do the annoying repetitive scan left and right to read the news in portrait orientation.

I have an Iphone 10R. No advertisements but the content does spill over. I just turn the phone sideways. Go to settings and check your pop up blocker
