Question of the Day - 30 April 2023

Q:

I'm in my early 60s and have been a Las Vegas guy (and LVA subscriber) for decades. My new girlfriend has never been to Las Vegas and is skeptical about the idea of having fun there. I've got the hotel room, rental car, and entertainment covered and I have my own ideas about the restaurants with the best view, but can you tell me where you would take a first-timer to dinner to wow her with the best view from the table?

A:

The Fountains of Bellagio provide one of the most sought-after views in Las Vegas and when Steve Wynn opened the place, he was smart enough to locate most of the restaurants directly overlooking the water. The best view among the great views is probably Le Cirque, dead-center on the second floor. It's also a fairly small dining room; hence, quite a few tables have primo views. But Picasso, Prime, and Lago all have nice views of the fountains.

Ironically, perhaps, Paris across the street offers the best aerial view of the fountains you'll find in a restaurant. For that high-altitude perspective, nothing beats the Eiffel Tower Restaurant on the 11th floor; reserve early to score a window seat. But no matter where you sit, this is also one of the city's most romantic restaurants.

For great views of the city as a whole, Top of the World at the Strat can't be beat. The restaurant does a 360-degree revolution every 80 minutes and it's 800 feet high. Just don't let the thrill riders plunging past your window or dangling off the edge freak you out!

Vetri Cucina atop the Palms' Fantasy Tower also has a great aerial view of the Strip, thanks to the resort's unique position a few blocks to the west. Almost every seat here is amazing. But the ones against the east wall have the best panoramic vantage point.

It's the same for Voodoo Steakhouse at the Rio, though these days, it's open only on Friday and Saturday nights.

And here's an idea you might not have thought of. Take your new love into the 'burbs where real life goes on. Marche Bacchus has amazing patio seating on the man-made Desert Shores lake. Feed the ducks and black swans while you eat or just enjoy some rare waterfront dining in the desert. The over/under on the comment, "I can't believe I'm in Las Vegas," is five minutes (take the under).

Anyone else have other suggestions for rooms with a view?

    Circa
The view from the top of Circa at the Legacy Club is pretty darn cool. I didn't spend much time up there, but when I went to use the coupon in the MRB for the champagne (hint hint) the view knocked my socks off. And it's always fun to get the membership to LVA and make a coupon run for something to show her just a smidgeon of a lot of different fun things to do like the match plays.

    Top of the Rip Off
I have been dining at the restaurant at the top of the Strat since it opened about 25 years ago. The quality of the restaurant has varied greatly over the years. However, my last meal there was very good so we planned to visit again last week. Unfortunately, they reached my point of indifference when I considered the following: If you want a seat by the window in the rotating part of the restaurant (which is why you are there!) they now charge $25 per person (paid in advance) to sit there. The least expensive steak is $ 74., all items are a la carte so your bill, BEFORE any wine, etc... will cost $ 125-$150 pp. I would suggest you spend $24 to go up to the observation deck at sunset and then spend your money on an excellent dinner elsewhere!

    Best views on the Strip
On our last trip in March, we went to the 66th floor at Resorts World for cocktails.

Top of the Rip Off Part II
Bravo, Mr. Small. Unfortunately, you nailed it. I've eaten there three times. Last October, I took (my) new wife there for our 5th anniversary; her first and last time there for sure. It is truly a One-In-A-Lifetime Experience.
We're not big drinkers. We had one drink each. She really wanted the seafood platter appetizer. For $100, I could have easily bought 3x+ seafood in a supermarket. Add one soup, one salad, steak, and sides -- all ala carte -- plus the extra cost of window-side seating -- with gratuity? Close to $500 for the two of us. Never again.
For the sake of the view, the suggestion of paying a reasonable fee to go to the observation deck where you CAN buy drinks and snacks (or eat elsewhere) is much saner.
Final thoughts: The food at Top of the World is good, tasty, and nicely presented. But for us, nothing was worth the cost; nothing screamed "you MUST come back for this again." It's fine for those with money to toss, not for those seeking value.

    Skybar
I second David's recommendation of the bar at the Waldorf Astoria between Aria and NYNY. It is called Skybar and is located on the 23rd floor (near reception!). Great list craft cocktails, some small bits, and a tremendous view. I recommend reservations to make sure you get a table or bar seat with a view.

    Oscar's detail
I agree that Oscar's has a great view, but there are a limited number of prime-view tables. I don't know whether it's possible to make a reservation specifically for a window table near the middle of the east side, but if not, then you should reserve the time that's when they open for dinner, or in summer, 60-90 minutes before they close (so that you can see all the lights on Fremont).

    Cosomopolitan
Get a room at the Cosmo with a fountain view and a balcony. Plenty of fancy restaurants and just across the street from Paris. Easy to walk the strip to a dozen different casino-hotel-resorts.
