Question of the Day - 01 February 2021

Q:

While I realize there’s no certainty in such a prediction, is there any working thought in Las Vegas either collectively or individually as to when the “old” Vegas might return, in terms of not requiring masks inside casinos, limiting the number of players on tables, full restaurant capacity, and possibly even the return of shows? If the answer is “nobody really knows,” my follow-up would be, with the vaccine rolling out, is there a metric of sorts that might need to be realized before it happens, as opposed to a date-certain answer that I think most of us realize is only a best guess at this point?

A:

The answer remains “no one knows,” same as it's been since the shutdown nearly a year ago.

Though a number of metrics are starting to show cause for some optimism, the situation can change quickly. COVID-19 continuing to spread, albeit at a seemingly slower rate at the time of this writing (late January); it's also still mutating. Also, currently, Nevada is one up from the bottom of the pile in terms of administering the vaccine to its residents; according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, only Alabama has administered fewer vaccines. Thus far, Nevada has inoculated less than 5% of its population.

At this point, the convention wisdom hasn't changed, as evidenced by the following statement from Stephanie Bethel of the Southern Nevada Health District in response to our email posing your question.

“We wish we could provide you with a set timeframe. While we know the COVID-19 vaccine is very effective at keeping people from getting sick, it is still new, and experts are studying exactly how it works. However, the vaccine is just one of the available tools that we have to help stop this pandemic. The more people get vaccinated, along with wearing masks, social distancing, and other health habits, the more quickly our community will get back to normal.”

So no, we don’t know when that will be. As soon as we do, we'll let you know. Until then, we do what we can to stay safe and solvent and hope for the best. We don't see any other way.

Don't expect the old Vegas to ever return
There are many reasons why but the most prominent one is that this pandemic is changing everything about how we live, socialize, work, and play. It will be several years before people will feel safe again since even with vaccines there will be annual outbreaks of a mutated version and continued mask wearing and social distancing. There will be additional problems of us against the government. Stimulus of Trumps $600 and Bidens $1400 wont solve anything and only increase our national debt. Better vaccines are on the way like Johnson and Johnson's one dose vaccine already proven effective against the current mutations. It will take 5 to 10 years before things get back to prepandemic normal but even then a new society will have emerged and old things will never be the same again. Prior to the mutations there was a national death rate of 6% which meant 20 million should die, the new mutations mean more than that. We have been lied to by our government.

    Mid 2022
After the Spanish Flu Pandemic was the Roaring 20s. Things will return to normal. But it most likely won't be this year. It won't be until the middle of next year at the earliest in my humble opinion.

    Just in Case
Just in case I make it back to Vegas i 2021, I bought my LVA Coupon Book. Plan to use a few.

Don't exaggerate the death toll currently is less than 2% of those that have contracted the virus and have proven it by testing positive. Many others have been sick but never got tested so the rate may even be lower. Why look to the darkest side when things are getting better?

It will return when we the people say it does
Politicians and health departments talk and talk, but IMO it is clear that, once vaccines are available to everyone, things will reopen. Political will to keep any restrictions will evaporate. Those who chose not to get vaccinated will simply be seen to have made their decision.

As the two primary vaccines are 95% effective in preventing symptomatic infection and 100% effective in preventing serious infection and death, vaccinated people are not dependent on others to get vaccinated too.

    New Governor
Things will change when we get a business friendly governor. That being said, it is time for more casinos to start up their buffets again. South Point does it.

  • Kevin Lewis Feb-01-2021
    Never
Because (as shown in these comments!!) so many people STILL think the virus is a political issue, we're not going to achieve the desired "herd immunity." Even if the virus doesn't mutate, we'll have those 40% who say they won't get vaccinated, those 30% who won't wear masks, etc. The result will be that it will still be dangerous to be in a crowd. Only anti-vaxxers and no-maskers will feel safe (stupidly).

It's Nevada's "business-friendly" stance that has made it one of the worst performers in the nation re the pandemic. And by business-friendly, I mean, of course, that the casinos run everything. They've pushed for staying open no matter how many people die as a result. Corporate profits over human lives.

I for one can tolerate the terrible, terrible agonizing discomfort of wearing a mask and the awful inconvenience of social distancing, but apparently a lot of people can't--or won't. So, we're boned, and so is Vegas. New Zealand, anyone?

    Corona
If patient is on vent hospital get 40k. If dies about 130k. People on vents have 90% death rate. If you were testing drug and had 90% death rate would you continue the drug. There are machines that improve oxygen levels and assist breathing and do not cause death. My opinion as physician is ventilator is forcing virus into the pleural space and resulting pneumonia. Elderly and anyone with comorbities reguardless of age should be careful. In the young 99.9 % will recover quickly if infected. Closing grade schools? Purelly political. They do not get infected. In MS schools were closed about one month. A pandemic as a result -no!!! Check Sweden #. They did nothing.
My theory is medical complex and big pharm have about milked nearly all out of the virus. 3.5 trillion and increasing. Where is flu virus? Suspicious?? Just remberber it will return in fall. Herd immunity will occur when you let the equilavejnt of a flu virus run it course. Lockdown continue don't help prevent the virus.

    Corona
Sorry part one did not post. Note cost is 100-200 dollars per shot. Gov pays. Gates got 11 billion from stimulus package. All viruses mutate flu is the same. This vaccine was not!!! Tested adequately. Did we use masks for flu virus? No. Now they are saying 2-3?masks should be used. No science Masks do not cover eyes and ears. Do you rub your eyes? My opinion eyes prob common inlet for virus. 100% effectiveness ? Pipe dream. This is political and all about money. Has anyone check where stimulus money goes. Pakistan Sudan gates WHO. With the vaccine the medical complex have pretty much milked the system dry. Money from printer in New York continues. Has anyone noticed value of dollar is reduced by 20% the last one year. Another print out of 1.6bil is coming. When will it end ? Maybe short period during summer. With current system Vegas as we know it is doomed. They cannot continue as is. Is Vegas going to survive with weekend vacation. No

    The sage of our times
We all welcome the incredibly insightful and eloquent postings of Mr. Patey. When I read sentences like "Pakistan Sudan gates WHO" and "Just remberber it will return in fall," everything becomes much clearer! Jerry, you will always be remberbered here!

    It's a new world
One of the lead scientist-doctors for Johnson-Johnson said that many medical diseases have been effectively controlled by vaccine and medicines, things like polio, smallpox, etc. When's the last time you heard of an outbreak for polio? But then he said they've never been able to eradicate/prevent other medical conditions like the flu or pneumonia or the common cold. He said this covid-19 virus is in that group, we will have to live with it in the environment forever. We can improve how we deal with it but will not eradicate it. So whether Vegas, cruise ships, buffets, big weddings, church services, etc make a return to nearly-normal depends on how well we make adjustments that minimize the risk enough for those wanting to attend. Covid and it's future variants are not going away. That cat is out of the bag and it thrives pretty well in our world with just a little help from people that refuse to acknowledge it's danger.

    The Grand Poohbah
I nominate @Kevin Lewis as Grand Poohbah of Las Vegas... or at least LVA comments along with The Loyal Order of Water Buffaloes. He makes the most sense here by far. Use masks, socially distance and squash this bug so all of us can look to "get back to normal." Science is still undefeated.

    KennyA, KennyA, KennyA
The average death rate has been at 6% since 2019. The true number of infected and died is unknown, just look at the nursing home scandal of New York.
Nursing homes, retirement communities, those who live alone, and the homeless (remember those who dwell in the Vegas flood tunnels). They are just another dead body and NO ONE autopsies them for cause of death. Our government under Trumps orders has been down playing the severity of the pandemic from the start and the only data we see is from hospital cases, not reality.
So KennyA, enlighten us by exactly how things are getting better.
The USA has the highest death rate and number of dead of any of the 200 countries on this planet. Why? Because Trump made his MAGA followers believe it was just a common flu not to be concerned about. We are being lied to about the pandemic on a daily basis, even hourly, and none of us will get the care of a dozen Doctors like Trump did if we get the virus.

    Scammed
When the sheep finally realize that they have been scammed in order to (again) enrich our government officials and their pals in the pharmaceutical industries, things may get back to normal.
That is, if the economy doesn't collapse under the almost 28 Trillion dollar debt.
I base my observation on the success India has had by using a combination of inexpensive drugs to knock the hell out of this WuHuFlu.
Kevin Lewis seems to need proof.
    Here it is:

It's a sad state of affairs when a third world country is able to leave the worlds superpower with egg on their face.
Keep believing sheeple, and don't forget Orange Man Bad.

as Jackie said, the old vegas will never return
Until people learn to take this serious nothing is going to change.Vaccines are one thing, but if all don't wear mask then its a losing cause.Casinos are laying it out right in front of us as they already regressed on giving people deals, comps, etc cause they know its going to take forever to even come close to what business was like before,so they are going to get what they can and not wait for the flock of people to return to vegas cause its not happening. It don't matter who quotes percentages, cause any deaths are too many, millions of people have died and still ignorant people refuse to abide with the rules and rather risk spreading or getting the virus. This may never go away, but it can be controlled if we all do what we are supposed to do
