Question of the Day - 30 October 2018

Q:

Can you research how various hotels are handling rooms that hang out the DO NO DISTURB placards over 2 to 4 nights continuously, in light of the security events last year in Vegas? Will maids enter after knocking, even with no one in the room? Will security staff enter after a specific amount of time has passed?

A:

We've been asked this question many times since October 1, 2017. We've tried to track down the answer on a number of occasions. The major casino companies have played their cards extremely close to the vest on this question. We suspect they don't want to telegraph actions that might compromise their security protocols -- though at least two have revealed plans to beef up deterrents: Caesars recently announced that it's adding armed security response teams to its properties and the Venetian is deploying more K-9 patrol units. MGM Resorts has hired at least nine former military and SWAT officers for its own rapid-response teams, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal.

Caesars also announced that "team members" will enter rooms that haven't been accessed by staff in the past 24 hours. "This includes rooms occupied by guests who have opted out of housekeeping service and/or display a 'room occupied' sign on their door," says spokesperson Adrienne Prather-Marcos.

This policy was immediately met with resistance from guests who presumably feared that security would walk in while, to paraphrase the Tubes in "What Do You Want from Life, they're doing the nasty things they must."

In anticipation of this, security staff "will always knock and announce their presence and purpose before seeking to enter any room." A brief visual check of the bedroom and bathroom will follow.

Boyd Gaming properties, by contrast, will wait two days before entering a room to check it out. However, guests are warned about it at check-in and it doesn't just apply to the company's Las Vegas properties, but all its hotel-casinos nationwide.

That was it. None of the other casino companies we queried responded to our requests. We keep trying, but it remains a mostly unanswerable question.

    There was talk of...
Screening people's bags and such, the way they do at airports, for guns, explosives, etc. THAT one died stillborn, however. Now, they seem to be relying on getting into a room soon enough before the (next) nutjob finishes deploying his arsenal. Good luck with that.

The only meaningful measure casinos can take is quit funneling profits to gun love organizations, but since most casinos are owned by conservative billionaires or megacorporations, good luck with that, too.

I predict that the next Vegas massacre (a matter of when, not if) will be some lunatic having a shootfest INSIDE a casino. One lost double down too many, or some such.

    Caesars
We opted out of housekeeping at a Caesars property. Close to noon on the 3rd day 2 security guys knocked on the door and politely explained that they were required to enter the room and input a code into the phone. They were fine when I explained that they couldn't go into the bathroom since my husband was in the glass-walled shower.

    @ Kevin
    "Gun Love Organizations???"
Maybe you could provide proof of any such organization EVER having any connection to any shooting. I'd rather see any public gathering forced to allow legal open carry and concealed carry of guns to the event, then when they fired back at such an idiot as last years shooter then fewer lives would have been lost and fewer injuries would have resulted. No, because such events have knee jerk fear reactions about guns the same as you do. Instead of speaking of things you know nothing about, why not do some research. Guns cause the fewest deaths of all weapons used to kill. Legal gun carry personnel (excluding law enforcement and security) have saved more lives than all illegal killings combined. I don't care one bit if you do not like guns, that is your right, but I do care when you would want to deny the rights of others who carry guns for the right of self protection of themselves and others.

    It was nice …
… to read your reference to those lyrics from The Tubes.
It reminds me of why I like you guys so much. And it certainly was discreet of you not to use the song’s very last line!
You do difficult but frequently useful research for your readers. Many thanks!

    Rio/CET properties
Just like PatK said of their experience, we opted out of housekeeping at the Rio and 2 days into our stay two security guards came to the door. They knocked twice before I could get to the door. I looked and saw it was security (I was in my nightgown), so I cracked the door open. I asked if we could have a few minutes to get dressed and they told us sure to take our time or we could have them come back in a little bit. We just went ahead and got dressed and had them come in. That was the only time they did that during our 4 night stay in August. Now in November, we will be staying 7 nights. We will see how it goes that trip!

    Jackie, that's ridiculous
To suggest that a few people whippin' out thar shootin' irons and firing away at a guy a quarter mile away and 23 stories up would have made any difference. I guess you don't know much about guns!

Maybe you're right, though, and the Second Amendment DOES entitle us to buy a huge arsenal of military-grade weapons and shoot hundreds of people when we lose at video poker. That's what the Founding Fathers intended! Just ask the NRA!

Gun love and gross misinterpretation of the Second Amendment aside, I wonder if any hotel/casinos have considered banning firearms on the property as a way to prevent future mass shootings. I, for one, would feel much safer staying at such a property. I wouldn't feel inconvenienced at all by such a ban, as I don't visit a Vegas casino with the goal of killing anybody.

    Kevin
First, educate yourself about guns before making comments that show your lack of knowledge about firearms and their responsible use. Also, civilians are not allowed to use or possess "military grade firearms" unless they are 50 caliber or less and operate on semi-automatic fire only. In fact just go read all of the BATF rules and regulations regarding legal gun ownership. As for the Second Amendment, the Supreme Court recently confirmed that all citizens have the right to open carry a firearm in all States (which pissed off California). Your not a Californian are you Kevin? Bottom line, making bias, bigoted statements publicly only show a lack of knowledge, education, maturity, and intelligence. Have a little self respect and demonstrate to others that you are a better person.

    Oops! Almost forgot
All Casino/Hotels have banned guns for decades, just go to each one and look for the signs. If you have trouble finding the signs just ask a Security Guard for help.

    Thoughts on guns
Briebart claimed there were 4x as many knives deaths as guns. This like the basement pornography ring of Hillary totally false. Statista gave 7,000 gun deaths and 1693 knive deaths in 2017. FBI had more knive deaths in 2016. There are 4 rights in the first Amend. These came ahead of the right to bear arms. We limit these rights! So stop with the propaganda about a "sacred right". Its total BS. We have historically limited arms rights in the past. Tommy guns were forbidden in the 20s, you gave you guns to the sheriff when you entered town. It took over a minute to load a rifle and musket. Musket very inaccurate. The Russian infiltrated NRA has mostly great members. But their leaders are dirtbag prostitutes. I used to hunt, my oldest son hunts and we love to prepare wild pig for feasts. Most Americans support the ownership of hand guns, shotguns, and hunting rifles. They are never going to be taken away. But common sense restrictions are needed!
