Question of the Day - 25 April 2020

Q:

How many different sports book operators are there in Las Vegas? I am shopping for the best odds I can find for next year’s Super Bowl, for a few particular teams. Last March, I managed to place a bet on Kansas City at 7-1, whoo hoo! Now I'm starting my research for next year. The odds are going to change with free agency and the draft, so some teams I want to bet now and some I want to wait and see what happens. I'm going to check Caesars, MGM, and William Hill, and I think that the Golden Nugget and The D/Golden Gate also have independent books with their own lines. Are there any other major players that I missed? Or any standout independent operators that are known to provide competitive odds that you can recommend?

A:

[Editor's Note: Obviously, this question was asked and answered before the shutdown, but it's a good overview of the way things should remain after reopening. Many thanks to Blair Rodman, author of our upcoming book All About Sports Betting, and Frank B, sports bettor extraordinaire, for their contributions to this answer.]

While there has been much consolidation among Las Vegas sports books, if you're shopping lines, you still have lots of places to check. You'll find independent books at Westgate, Wynn, Treasure Island, and South Point (which has a satellite location at Rampart), as well as those you mentioned at the Golden Nugget and Circa, which presently has locations at the D and Golden Gate (and soon to be headquartered at Circa, across Fremont from the Golden Gate, due to open December 2020). These are well worth checking out to look for advantageous lines.

Major corporations with sports books, which should have the same futures lines among connected books, include:

Stations

  • Red Rock Resort
  • Green Valley Ranch
  • Palace Station
  • Santa Fe Station
  • Texas Station
  • Boulder Station
  • Fiestas
  • El Cortez

Cantor

  • Cosmopolitan
  • Hard Rock
  • M Resort
  • The Palazzo
  • Palms
  • Silverton
  • Tropicana
  • The Venetian

Caesars

  • Bally’s
  • Caesars Palace
  • Cromwell
  • Flamingo
  • Harrah’s
  • The Linq
  • Planet Hollywood
  • Paris
  • Rio

MGM

  • Aria
  • Bellagio
  • Circus Circus
  • Excalibur
  • Luxor
  • Mandalay Bay
  • MGM Grand
  • Monte Carlo
  • The Mirage
  • New York-New York

Boyd

  • Aliante
  • Cannery
  • Eastside Cannery
  • Eldorado
  • Gold Coast
  • Jokers Wild
  • The Orleans
  • Sam’s Town
  • Suncoast

Finally, there's also William Hill, where you can often find good lines and has locations at pretty much every casino not listed above.

The differences in odds will mostly be a result of how much house edge is built into the chart your looking at. Based on that important factor, you can expect places like Westgate and Circa to have the best prices on average and places like Coast and Station to have the worst. This is just a function of the house takeout built into their future book.

Despite the fact that you'll hear each and every year about the tickets that remain alive heading into the Super Bowl, looking at future books for value is a tough road to travel. There's a huge pile of losing tickets on the other side of the a book's ledger by then and often they're already in a can't-lose position. They'll whine a little about the potential liability if some decently priced team wins, but in most cases, they'll be sitting pretty and just waiting to see exactly how much they'll make for the year.

In the meantime, however, betting futures is without doubt a fun thing to do, especially when your team is a contender all season long. Congrats on the Chiefs and happy hunting for next year!

    Coast?
You listed casinos by brand. Then you wrote an article. And in the article you mentioned Coast but hadn't listed them previously. Coast was bought by Boyd ages ago.

    Coast = Boyd
The mentions of Coast and Boyd refer to the same group of sports books. They're owned by Boyd Gaming, but many still refer to the collective as "Coast books."

    Sign of old age?
I'm sure there's a term for that - when people keep calling a place by it's original name. I know I have a bad case of it when it comes to casinos and sports teams. The San Diego Chargers and Hooters are the latest but I've used the Hilton, Barbary and Fitz from time to time and those places changed names long ago. People know what you mean when they hear the old name.

    More for Boyd?
Did you miss The Fremont and the MSS/Cal sportsbooks downtown for the Boyd group? I remember well that the Freement always used to advertise home of the Stardust line but that has been gone for quite a while. Yet all of those casinos are still owned as part of the Boyd collection and I can't imagine that they would bring in an outside source like Bill Hill to fill their book needs.

    Boyd Downtown
Yes, Boyd runs the books at California and Fremont.
