Just curious, in most cities and towns in America, trash pick-up is once a week. My question is: How often and how much trash is picked-up from the Strip hotels in an average week?
Other than the helpful folks at MGM Resorts, no other casinos that we contacted wanted to bite on this question.
MGM spokeswoman Callie Driehorst says that trash is collected every day. The total amount of daily waste generated by the company’s 13 Las Vegas properties comes to 289 tons. That’s 22.2 tons per resort per day. And if those numbers beggar imagination, to answer your question specifically, that's a little more than of 2,000 total tons a week -- four million pounds of trash from MGM properties alone. It's the equivalent of 36 Airbus A380s, the world's largest passenger jet.
However, not all of that goes into the garbage truck.
“All MGM Resorts properties have transformed their trash docks into recycling docks. On average, each property recycles nearly 43 percent of the waste that is generated daily,” writes Driehorst. That’s nearly 12.5 tons of trash per resort per day, or 248,540 pounds of material that isn’t going into the landfill.
Adds Driehorst, “The company’s strategic approach to on-site sorting, source reduction, and management of non-recyclable items drives continuous efforts in this area.”
We’re glad to hear it.
