Question of the Day - 16 November 2023

Q:

Are there any notable cemeteries in the Las Vegas area? How about veterans cemeteries? I remember visiting a veterans cemetery on the way to Laughlin.

A:

The most notable is Woodlawn, a 40-acre cemetery located at 1500 Las Vegas Blvd. N. at E. Owens Avenue. It's the oldest cemetery in Las Vegas, established in 1914, and was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2006. Gravesites of note include those for J.T. McWilliams, who laid out the original (pre-railroad) Las Vegas town site and actually designed the cemetery itself; gunslinger "Diamondfield" Jack Davis (sentenced to hang for two murders in Idaho in 1897, he got off, moved to Tonopah, then Vegas, and died when he was struck by a taxicab here in 1949); legendary gambler Nicholas "Nick the Greek" Dandolos; and Billy Delmar Guy, one of the original members of the Coasters singing group.

Palm Memorial Park near E. Warm Springs and N. Pecos has some celebrity graves: Tony Curtis, Redd Foxx, Pat Morita, Pancho Gonzales, Phyllis and Ruby McGuire, and Robin Leach. Heavyweight champ Sonny Liston is buried at Davis Memorial Park, just east of the airport.

As for veterans cemeteries, there are two.

The Nevada State Veterans Memorial is located on E. Washington and Las Vegas Blvd. North on the grounds of the Grant Sawyer State Building, just north of downtown. The two-acre memorial and park features 18 larger-than-life statues, depicting soldiers from the Revolutionary War to the Global War on Terror.

The one you remember is probably the Southern Nevada State Veterans Cemetery, located on Veterans Memorial Drive in Boulder City next to the municipal airport. It occupies 79 acres owned and maintained by the state. The grounds are immaculately maintained and it's a peaceful place to visit and honor veterans, their spouses, and eligible dependents.

    NON-AMULAATORY VEGAS
I am pushing 70 and have some friends who have lost the ability to walk. I can see them having fun zooming around on those motorized mini golf-cart like things. What Vegas Hotel would be best for them to join me at

    oldest casino
As far as I know, the oldest continuously operating casino in Las Vegas is El Cortez. The oldest in the entire valley is Railroad Pass. But with the requirement of the same owners, I'm not sure. Maybe The California in the mid '70s which is still owned by the Boyds?
