Question of the Day - 15 May 2025

Q:

When was the first QoD and who came up with the idea?

A:

We received this question a couple of months ago and held it until today -- which is, in fact, the "natural" 21st anniversary of Question of the Day.

The very first QoD ran on May 15, 2004. The question was, "What is Question of the Day?"

Who thought it up? Anthony. Back in those days, he fielded all the common, technical, and frequent questions about gambling and Las Vegas and from there it was a short step to answering them on the website so all of our subscribers could get the benefit of his responses.

Here's how he described it in that first Q&A:

"After 21 years in this business, we’ve amassed a collection of literally tens of thousands of requests for information and more pour in by the hour. This space is where we’ll answer and archive them for all to see and each day it’ll grow into an online symposium on all things Las Vegas and gambling."

The next several questions give you an idea of the kinds of FAQs we fielded in those more innocent and bountiful days: How do you beat the traffic on the Las Vegas Strip? What the heck are 9/6 JoB, FPDW, NSUD, and TITO? What does it mean when casinos advertise double or triple or bonus points? What does the term "cashback" mean? Is the Strip Monorail running yet? And the age-old question, Can something be done about the rude leafleteers on the Strip handing out cards of mostly naked women and their phone numbers?

Since then, we've answered 7,665 of your submitted questions and amazingly enough, you still haven't run out of them. As long as you keep sending them in and commenting on them -- both of which let us know that you still enjoy this feature -- we'll keep pumping out the answers.

    Most often asked...
    "What is the $20 trick?"

Used to be asked a lot when the 'trick' was supposedly a sure way to get a room upgrade. Haven't seen it at all lately.

Nobody tipping at check in anymore? LOL.

    A QoD about the QoD
That's so "meta." The QoD is my favorite feature. The only change I'd like is fewer questions about the machinations of Spike Slimebucket and the Gouge Corporation in acquiring/managing/burning down the Golden Commode.

    Congrats
Keep up the good work! And thanks especially for the sometimes obscure words that are used, QoD has helped improve my vocabulary!
