Question of the Day - 23 January 2020

Q:

I play video poker for points. I start with Jacks or Better for the two-unit return on two pair to help the money last longer. When I get the "feeling" that 4-of-a-kind might hit, I change to Double Double for the bigger payout and play for a while. Smart or stupid? (And at the bottom of the answer is the link to the new poll on your favorite strip resort-casinos.)

A:

The short answer is it doesn't matter, but the details of your play have some bearing.

Are you playing 6/5 Jacks or Better, where the full house pays 6 and the flush pays 5? If so, you're playing with just a 95% return. At 7/5, it's 96.15%. At 8/5, it's 97.3%. Those percentages, of course, all assume that you're playing perfect strategy and almost no one does, so the returns are actually lower.

As for Double Double Bonus, if you're playing 9/6 DDB with a theoretical return of 98.98%, that's better than the short-pay JoB schedules listed. So switching would be "smart" (and you probably should have been playing that from the start). However, you're still playing a negative-expectation game and DDB strategy is more difficult and less intuitive than JoB's. There are lots of variables involved, but playing the game with the highest overall return is usually the prudent move, regardless of how you feel. With this in mind, you should have a copy of Jean Scott's The Frugal Video Poker Scouting Guide handy to make comparisons.

Back to your method, the reality is, switching on a feeling is neither smart nor stupid. If you're playing by the seat of your pants without having done much study, changing games on a whim won't have any appreciable affect on your outcome. If anything, frequently changing games takes time away from play, which is a good thing when you're not the favorite, so change away!

We, too, sometimes have a feeling that we're going to hit a 4-of-a-kind. There's nothing wrong with "wishful thinking," but we don't change games or strategies in response to it.

    Compromise
LVA's answer ignores your comment about trying to make your money last. Another option when you get that feeling is to switch to Bonus poker. Of course the pay schedules are still key. I've seen machines where JOB is 8/5 and the Bonus Poker is also 8/5 in which case you should always be playing the Bonus poker. But if JOB is 8/5 and Bonus is 7/5 that's a good option for you. Double bonus is also a good option but even it's a good schedule, the strategy is more difficult. But if played well has less variance than Double Double while still giving you the thrill of higher quad payouts. Remember to learn all the payout schedule percentages and you can make good decisions.

    On the other hand
I will ask only this. Have you had psychic experiences in your life? If so, your "feeling" may be dead on but that feeling may be for the current game and not the switched to game which is "greed" influenced. If you haven't had any psychic experiences in your life then it is smarter to stick to perfect play on the higher return game. In case you didn't know "perfect play" is designed for one goal and one goal only --- to make your money last as long as possible toward hitting the "Royal".

Pick your game with highest payback and use a card with the best plays for every hand dealt. I do it. This slows me down and I get to play longer .
