I have a question concerning video poker. I am trying to determine the comparative volatility/variance between Full Pay, NSUD (100.73) and Loose Deuces (100.14). Is there a way to calculate it? Maybe someone knows the figures for these three games. I tried Videopoker.com, but never got an answer. Also did not get an answer from another video poker site I asked.
You've finally come to the right place. We handed this one off to Bob Dancer.
First of all, NSU Deuces returns 99.73%, not 100.73%. And you were slightly off on the Loose Deuces return as well.
Here are the variances:
FPDW (100.76%) 25.4
Loose Deuces (100.15%) 42.0
NSU Deuces (99.73%) 25.8
The reason Loose Deuces has such a higher variance (very similar to that of Double Double Bonus) is that so much of the return is in four deuces, which comes about every 4,664 hands on average. Four deuces in the other two games come less often (because you go for straight flushes more often when dealt one or two deuces), and when they do, they pay “only” 1,000 coins, rather than the 2,500 coins of Loose Deuces.
