Has there been any study or discussion as to why people still flock to Las Vegas despite the blatant profit (resort fees, paid parking, decreased comps, decreased game percentages) over customers attitude that now seems to affect all the casinos?
It’s a continuing mystery and one that has gone largely unexplained, even by the casinos themselves, although some claim that consumers “like” the changes -- as in the famous claims that blackjack players prefer the 6-5 payouts on naturals because "the numbers are bigger than 3-2" and "paid parking enhances the customer experience."
We took a look into it ourselves three years ago, when Las Vegas was posting record numbers, even in the face of resort fees and triple-zero roulette. Considering the explosion of casinos across the country, we asked our readers what their main reason for visiting Las Vegas might be.
The plurality of respondents (15%) said that, quite simply, it was their favorite place to gamble. Running second (10%) was that, even with the rising prices, it was still one of their most affordable domestic vacations. Others cited the variety of entertainment offerings concentrated all in one place (9%). Boredom was impossible, they said, while others voted for “It’s always been my happy place.” (See the poll here.)
Las Vegas’ evolution into a mecca for fine dining also made its presence felt with survey respondents (7%), while weather (4%) and free drinks (ditto) were also popular.
Three percent said Las Vegas’ edge on regional gambling was that they could act out and show their wild side, something they couldn’t indulge closer to home. Similar numbers lauded Nevada's scenery and the ability to get away from vacation destinations that are rife with families and children. Conventions and trade shows barely registered, although we think that would be different if we ran the same poll today.
Other tiny blips on the radar were visiting family friends, shopping — whether high-end or bargain-oriented — not to mention an easy destination from California. A few even cited “the paid sex” and “the free sex." A handful wanted to go somewhere other than Atlantic City and a teeny-tiny minority wanted to see the NHL’s Golden Knights play, a number we’re certain would be larger now.
Only five percent said, “I no longer go to Las Vegas.” Since the casinos are currently making as much or more money off fewer players, we’re not sure that contingent is missed.
In the end, we came to the conclusion that "it's still Vegas, baby!" And that goes for our own readership, which skews to the older side, and says nothing of the younger generations that don't have the glory days of Bargain City, Comp City, and Sin City to compare to today's Gouge City.
