Question of the Day - 23 April 2018

Q:

I have been trying to locate Pick ’Em or Pick a Pair video poker. Do you know of any casinos in Las Vegas where I may find this game?

A:

This is the perfect question to remind QoD readers about the excellent vpfree2.com website.

By using the search function, we found 17 Pick ’Em 25¢ VP machines with a 2-3-5-11-15-18-120-239.8-1200 schedule (99.95%) at the Fremont in downtown Las Vegas.

That’s it. No other Las Vegas casinos have these machines with this paytable in any denominations, according to vpfree2.

None in Laughlin or Reno do either, but Barton’s 93 Club in Jackpot, Nevada, has one nickel and one dollar machine, the Commercial in Elko has one multi-denom machine (5¢, 10¢, 20¢, 25¢, $1), and the Red Lion, also in Elko, has one 25¢ machine.

You can look for yourself for these machines in the other search locations: Canada, East, Gulf Coast, Midwest, West, and online.

In addition to the search function are listings of all the VP machines by casino around the country and Canada, reviews of casinos, paytables, tools, and more.

Pick 'Em is fun to play. If you want to hit the Fremont game and play it accurately, we recommend the Bob Dancer/Liam W. Daily Pick 'Em Poker Strategy Card.

Too many errors in QoD copy
I am a long-time LVA and QoD reader. However, I have been noticing that almost every day there is at least one typo in the QoD answer. An occasional typo or spelling error is inevitable even in the New York Times, but the frequency with which they now appear in the QoD suggests an inattention to detail that I think deserves to be addressed. These appeared just in the last ten days:

    4/23 "paytables"
    (pay tables are two words)

    4/22 "has a 250 plus rooms"
    (no "a")

    4/21 Michael Jordon
    (should be Jordan. Good Grief!)

4/19 A long excerpt from Anthony Curtis. No typos!

    4/16 straiten-jacketed
    (should be straightjacketed)

4/13 if you're in rental car
    (missing an "a")

4/12 though the most dealers don't speak it too well, if at all.
    (no "the")

4/12 Macau casinos are crowded with table games, which take precedent over machines
    (precedence)

4/11 Given the Supreme Court's upcoming decision on legalizing sports betting nationally is imminent
    (needs *that* the Supreme...)

Just to note, the VPFree2 site does not list all games, but those that have been submitted as being most "playable" at a given casino. So there may be other Pick 'Em games around that have inferior pay tables and therefore aren't listed in the database.

    Good Grief!
The QoD feature is free! It provides valuable and interesting information every day. I will happily take a typo or grammar error every day in exchange for the information(the important part of QoD)! Keep up the great work! Thanks for the efforts in answering the questions.

    Of course it matters
Sure it's free but the typo's pointed out should have easily been spotted and corrected. Just because it's published on a website instead of on paper doesn't mean you shouldn't have someone proofread the copy.

  • VegasVic Apr-23-2018
    No one?
Hmmmm no one pointed out the typo I put into my recent post. I'm disappointed, I put it out there for a reason haha.

  • Anthony Curtis Apr-23-2018
    Yeow!
Dunno, man. That's being kind of overly picky. Look, I hate typos. And it absolutely reflects poorly on things like a book query. But in an online feature that churns out every day, I think there's latitude. The important thing is that a typo doesn't alter the intended meaning and that's not the case with any of these. And it will always be "paytables" in LVA. Hate "pay tables." Paytable is house style.

    Typos
    Not typo's.

    vpfree2 "west"
Paiute Palace, Bishop, CA is 266 miles from LV. Been in Bishop lots of times but not the Paiute Palace. Jackpot NV (been there too a couple times) is 488 miles from LV (both according to Google maps) Dang, didn't check for typos.

  • Jeff Apr-23-2018
    @ Anthony Curtis
If the only criterion for writting is weather or not the meening is alterred, their wood be nothing wrong with this sentince.

The sloppiness of frequent typos, misspellings, and bad grammar reflects poorly on LVA (and you) just as much as it does on writing anywhere else. It makes the site look unprofessional. The QoD is only a few hundred words and is not written on deadline. The whole answer could be proofed in a few minutes. If the author of the answer can't spot his own errors when checking his copy, someone else should do it for him.

This poor writing is relatively new on LVA. When the English woman authored the QoD, there were rarely, if ever, any errors. If it was possible to produce clean copy then, it should be possible to produce clean copy now.

Don't make lame excuses. Please just get the QoD back to where it used to be. (BTW, I love LVA and have for more than a dozen years.)

    Gone
Less than one month after this post, Fremont has downgraded them, and full pay pick 'em in Vegas is now history....

  • Dave in Seattle. Jul-30-2018
    Pick-a-pair
The Fremont is the ONLY Las Vegas casino that has it!
Now,they have changed the pay table from 99.95% down to 98.74%?
    https://wizardofodds.com/games/video-poker/tables/pick-em-poker/
      How disappointing!
The pay out for a straight flush has changed from 239.8 down to 200?
Maybe the quads have gone from 120 to 100.

    TYPOS!!!!
What do you say to an injured proof reader?
    Their,there,the're.
