Question of the Day - 02 May 2025

Q:

Can you walk to any casino/hotels directly from the airport? If so, which one, and what’s your advice re where to depart Reid Airport, which direction to walk, and how many minutes that will take? Also, which casino/hotel is located closest to the airport, requiring the least expensive rideshare or taxi?

A:

The challenge isn't so much the distance from Reid International to the the nearest hotel, though it's no walk in the park. According to Google maps, it's two miles from Terminal 1 to Virgin Las Vegas at the corner of Paradise and Harmon, a roughly 45-minute walk (assuming you can carry your luggage on your back and don't have to roll a suitcase, which will slow you down).

The problem is more that the airport is designed for anything but walking to and from. The sidewalks peter out at the end of the main terminal building and then you've got more than a half-mile of lane crossings, overpasses, and general heavy Las Vegas traffic -- lead-foot cab drivers, visitors in rental cars, buses and shuttles, limousines all jockeying for position, with a luggage-toting pedestrian the furthest thing from their minds.

Not that it can't be done, of course. In our many many trips to and from the airport, we have seen, though on rare occasions, pedestrians on foot, wheeling suitcases in both directions, though admittedly they looked a little bewildered. As always when hoofing it around traffic, if you're especially cautious and patient, you'll probably make it. (A good idea, however, might to be make sure your life insurance is paid up.)

To get to Virgin, you follow the one-way traffic past the terminal building and out onto Wayne Newton Boulevard. From there, Google suggests heading east to weave around and under the approach to Terminal 1 and past the economy surface parking lot, then north again to rejoin Wayne Newton. From there, it's a straight shot up Paradise to E. Harmon.

Virgin is inside the taxi fixed-rate zones, so the charge will be $21. Rideshare will be somewhat cheaper.

    Best Western But No Casino
I believe the Best Western on Paradise is a 30-minute walk from the airport. They do not have a casino, however.

    WHY?
To Save a few Bucks? catch the 108 Bus lower level of term 1,it goes up Paradise. or take the Free Rental Car bus to the Rental Center which is right next to the South Transit center on Gilespie. Catch the Deuce up the strip! if you must walk... check Youtube there was a documented video of a guy making the walk

    Heat
One thing that was left out was dealing with the heat during Summer. If you fly in in July, chances are high that you came from someplace where you are not acclimated to the hot dry desert climate. Heat stoke is a sure fire way to ruin your vacation. Also, isn't Virgin closer to the airport than Silver Sevens?

    Tropicana?
Isn't Silver Sevens at Paradise and Flamingo? (Which would make Virgin closer to the airport)

Strongly recommend against it but . .
To go directly north from the airport I thought that you had to go on an overpass that has no sidewalk and would literally force pedestrians to walk on the roadway itself. To make things even more dangerous, I believe the overpass has a slight up/down grade, so motorists entering the overpass might not see pedestrians walking on the roadway until it’s too late. But I only go to Las Vegas once a year so I could be wrong.
I sometimes stay at the Motel 6 on Tropicana and a corner of the airport is very close to it, I thought that Oyo or the MGM Grand were the closest casinos to the airport.

    Silver Sevens
I just returned from Las Vegas yesterday and stayed at Silver Sevens. Unfortunately the airport shuttle was in for repairs, so I took a cab. He charged me $21.00 and said we were inside the fixed rate zone. Did I get overcharged?

Bus is an option, Airport Shuttle much better
I took the bus once to the downtown terminal and then walked to the Golden Nugget, not planning on doing that again but was the cheapest option.
I normally take the Airport Shuttle to my hotel and a ride share back to the airport for my return trip.

FYI - stayed once at the Motel 6 on Tropicana, never again. Drug dealers abound and a scary walk to the Oyo or MGM.

    corrections
Virgin, on Paradise and E. Harmon, is closer to the airport than Silver Sevens. And Barbara, Silver Sevens is inside the taxi Zone 1 (it's not on the list of hotels in the zones, but it is on the Taxicab Authority's map), so you weren't ripped off. This answer has been amended to reflect the corrections.

    done it
it's been about 10 years but I walked from Excalibur, nothing to do with money just curious. It's not a long walk, but very booring. Wouldn't recommend in summer.

    car rental center shuttle
We have timeshare at Tahiti Village and always have our visiting friends take shuttle to rental center, then just 2 block walk or collect them there. Tahiti Village also runs rooms like a hotel--very easy, and a great place to stay

What kind of idiot would walk to a hotel from the airport?

  • [email protected] May-02-2025
Made it one time from The Signature
One time just for the challenge and because the weather was nice and I had time I walked from the Signature to the Airport! Stopped at the subway across from what was then Hard Rock for a sandwich and chips on the way then continued. Other than crossing Trop it wasn't too bad then as there is a sidewalk below the over street entrance to the airport you take coming south that borders one of the employee parking lots I believe. You make a couple crossings there and then come up along the entrance to terminal one. Fun times!

    It's Not That Bad
I first walked from the airport to The Trop about eight years ago. This was before the taxi zones, and I had a few issues with long hauling. Made the walk in 45 minutes with my rollerboard. It's all on sidewalks, so there's less risk than indicated here. Of course, mornings and evenings are the best time to do this, but I've done it 12-14 times and had no issues. I'm 59 and consider it my workout before 3-4 days of eating/drinking/gambling. The video on YouTube shows the exact route. Don't be scared, give it a shot!

This idiot has done it many times
    <>

This idiot has done it a half dozen times. Furthest I've gone to/from is Gold Coast. Easy walk that's mostly paved sidewalk. I've done it with luggage before but learned the best way to go is pack light and use backpack. When you're broke and got time to kill why not. Just bring a water. And the exercise is free. You'll get a honk every once in awhile from someone who thinks you lost all your money in Vegas and can't afford a cab. Nah, I am just cheap.
