Question of the Day - 24 December 2022

Q:

Has Las Vegas ever had a white Christmas?

A:

Not tomorrow! Though much of the country is suffering from sub-zero wind chill, blizzard conditions, and high winds, the forecast for Christmas Day in Las Vegas is for dry, clear, and warm, with a high of 68 and a low of 42. Balmy.

And typically, your chance of escaping snow on Christmas by coming here ispretty good, though it's not a sure thing.

According to the Las Vegas branch of the National Weather Service, traces of snow were recorded at McCarran International Airport on December 25 in 1941, 1988, 2008, and 2015. But the situation last time is representative; in 2015, flurries that hit the area between midnight and 2 a.m. had melted by dawn.

Las Vegas came close to a white Christmas in 2008. On December 17 of that year, the area received up to eight inches, necessitating the first snow-day school closures since 1989. But the snow disappeared several days before Christmas.

The city did have a white New Year's in 1974. That year, a slow-moving storm dumped between four and five inches of snow on January 1, 4, and 5, for a total of 13.4 inches over the five-day period, producing “glass-like” road conditions and resulting in hundreds of auto accidents.

The record snowfall for a 24-hour period occurred on January 31, 1979. That day, 7.4 inches of snow closed all the schools valley-wide. Power outages hit the whole valley and more than 150 automobile accidents kept the police and fire department very busy.

As a general rule, snowfall in Clark County is more likely in January than December.

    White Christmas?
Actually, we could say that every Christmas before the civil rights era of the 1960s was a white Christmas, because Black people were not very welcome in town, and they were never featured in anything relating to Christmas. And the other races and "people of color" didn't fare too much better.

     Why?
Al - You win the award for the most totally uncalled for remark. Sad,just sad.

Easy David. I think we can all jump in on solidarity for Al. We've never undertaken what it is like to walk in their shoes. I'd like to think that it used to suck more than it does now. I want equality. It's embarrassing that i have to say this. I guess human beings need to find value in their lives. And some times it's misdirected. We have bigger fish to fry. Come on man. Racism is ignorance. Let's do something more productive.

There is a time and place for such postings - this was posted to inflame, and not to inform. There is enough hatred in this world.

    amazing
I agree with David. This was a topic on SNOW, the white cold stuff that falls from the sky in winter in some places. And some how it turns into a race issue? Seriously? And Thomas sounds like he's trying to virtue signal-moral grandstand? I've heard it all now. Sick.

    Well...anyway...
There's a gentleman here in town that has pics of the frozen waterfalls at Mirage.

Perhaps someone at the LVA can chime in with some info.
