Question of the Day - 19 March 2019

Q:

In a recent question about the fate of the Rio and the World Series of Poker, you mentioned that the WSOP might be held in the new Raiders stadium. How is that possible? The poker tournament is held from May to July. Wouldn’t the playing cards disintegrate in the heat and sweat?

A:

They might, if they were being handled in the ambient 110-plus temperatures, but more of a concern would be the players wilting and collapsing of heat prostration (wouldn’t it?).

Good thing that the stadium will be completely enclosed.

Though the renderings show an open roof and a long expanse of exposed wall, the stadium will be covered by a translucent fluoride-based polymer dome, while an 80- by 215-foot opening will have doors that can be retracted to allow for fresh air when temperatures are cooperating (fall and winter). The massive “window,” of course, will face east for a magnificent view of the Strip.

Though it’s unlikely at this point that the WSOP will be held in the stadium in the foreseeable future (Caesars Palace is a likelier next venue), if the poker tournament ever were held there, the air-conditioning would certainly save the day.

    Much more interesting on television
I watched the final table of the WSOP main event a few years ago and it was very strange. Nobody in the room can see the hole cards, and of course there are no commentators, so it's very difficult to know what is going on. This conference room in the Rio convention center was full but we were only 10 feet from the table. It would have been a terrible experience to be 200 feet from a few people sitting at a table in the middle of a stadium.

    Also
There is room for about 100 spectators now, with free admission, and there were only about 10 people waiting to get in. I think the stadium would look very empty. Football stadiums are best suited for football.

The only worse spectator sport is golf
I always get a kick out of the reactions from the gallery, who are pretty much limited to cheering whenever their boy wins a pot. I remember in particular when some guy at the final table rivered a flush and put his opponent all in--and that opponent had a set. It looked like the flush guy was going to wipe out his opponent and increase his stack by about 60%, but the guy with the set made a brilliant laydown. The peanut gallery cheered wildly--unaware that their hero had essentially just "lost" about 12 million chips!!
