Question of the Day - 15 February 2019

Q:

I was born in a Year of the Pig year. Are any casinos offering chips with the Year of the Pig 2019 and can you buy them without going to Vegas?

A:

We first went directly to the Casino Chips and Gaming Tokens Collectors Club’s website, where we found a small thread in the forum that listed Year of the Pig as being issued by Palace Station ($5) and Rampart in $5 (red) denominations and Cosmopolitan in $25 (green).

We were a little surprised by the paucity of Sin City casinos issuing commemorative chips for Chinese New Year; in the past, many more have. For example, for the last Year of the Pig, Harrah’s, the Palms, and the Wynn all issued them.

We double-checked and found that Palace Station, Rampart, and Cosmopolitan are issuing them, though the Cosmo’s are promotional chips only and aren’t for sale.

We also learned that the Gold Coast is giving away free-play Year of the Pig Chips to customers based on their play history. Since it’s free play, you can’t buy one – but if you’re given one, you’re certainly welcome to keep it instead of redeeming it.

And Callie Driehorst of MGM says the company has given employees commemorative name tags.

As for buying them without having to go the casino, the answer is yes and no. No, you can’t get them directly from the casino without showing up and either buying them or being awarded them as free play. But yes, you can buy them on eBay. When we checked, we saw a $5 Palace Station 2019 chip for sale for $9.99 and a Cosmo $25 chip, complete with a red commemorative envelope, for $59.99.

Year of the Pig 2019 chips were also available on eBay from the Hard Rock Tampa and the Hard Rock Biloxi. Year of the Pig 2007 chips issued by the Palms and the Wynn were also for sale.

How long has it been since anybody has given out $8 chips?

    Who needs chips
For my Year of the Pig commemorative gift, I want something more appropriate: free bacon.
