Question of the Day - 24 July 2024

Q:

I recall that the taxicabs for a couple of years have a set price to casinos from the airport. I want to use a cab next month from the airport to the Horseshoe (old Bally's). Can you tell me the pricing that cabs may charge?

A:

The Las Vegas Taxicab Authority instituted zone-based pricing from the airport to the Strip on January 1, 2021, after a six-month trial period.

Instituting flat-fare zones between the airport and the tourist corridor provides the riding public certainty and transparency in the fares they pay, helps eliminate the scourge of long-hauling, and levels the playing field between drivers, taxi companies, and Uber and Lyft.

Before zone pricing, cab rides to and from Reid International were metered, charging by time and distance in the usual fashion. Since Las Vegas became a zone city, the fares are calculated by the ride and aren’t subject to surge pricing.

There are three zones with set fares. Prices have gone up a bit over the years and they're now as follows.

Zone 1 is between Sunset Road and Tropicana Avenue. That costs $22. Hotels in Zone 1 include Alexis Park, Delano, Desert Rose, Excalibur, Four Seasons, Virgin, Howard Johnson by Wyndham, Luxor, Mandalay Bay, MGM Grand, Motel 6 Las Vegas [Tropicana], and OYO.

Zone 2 is between Tropicana and Flamingo and it will cost you $26: Aria, Bellagio, Elara, Horseshoe, Marriott Grand Chateau, New York-New York, Paris, Park MGM, Planet Hollywood, Polo Towers, Cosmopolitan, Orleans, Signature at MGM Grand, Travelodge by Wyndham, and Vdara.

Zone 3, $30, is between Flamingo and the STRAT, the northern terminus of the zones (they're bounded on the west by I-15 and on the east roughly by Paradise Road): Caesars Palace, Circus Circus, Courtyard by Marriott Convention Center, Embassy Suites Convention Center, Encore, Flamingo, Gold Coast, Harrah’s, Hilton Grand Vacations, Las Vegas Convention Center, Las Vegas Marriott, Linq, Palace Station, Palazzo, Palms, Resorts World , Residence Inn by Marriott Convention Center, Rio, Sahara, SpringHill Suites, Strat,  Treasure Island, Trump International, Venetian, Westgate, Westin, and Wynn.

    Deceptive
Despite the implications of three numbered zones, Zone 3 is much larger than Zones 1 and 2 combined, so about 80% of all riders will be going to Zone 3, which is $30 a pop. All airport pickups also pay a $2.40 surcharge, because, well, you're a tourist and Las Vegas lives by squeezing you.

    Downtown
I see downtown is not included. Why?

  • Gregory Mawson Jul-24-2024
    zone 2 or 3?
The Orleans is also included (don't know which zone)

    Missing Casinos
I don't see Sunset Station or all of the casinos downtown. I'm guessing more than zone 3

  • Scotski Jul-24-2024
    Orleans Is Zone 2
    Orleans Is Zone 2

    Zone 3
The cost of Zone 3 is $30. Zone 2 should really go down to the Wynn. It appears to be set up to get most fares in Zone 3, the higher fare.

    Non Casinos?
What if I need to go somewhere in the Las Vegas valley that isn't a casino?

    Downtown
Cabs to downtown are not part of the zoned system, so you will pay whatever the meter says which can vary wildly depending upon traffic conditions.

    Downtown
I wish they had a zone for downtown. Last time I took a cab from the airport to downtown it was just under $50 (little more than a year ago). A Lift/Uber can many times be had for half of that. By the way, the fare for Zone 3 is $30 (not listed in the answer).

    Whoops
Thanks, Gregory, for the correction. The Zone 3 pricing has been added to the answer.

    taxis
it's still confusing, I take them several times a year and sometimes drivers "forget". I always say "flat rate, right?"

  • Scott Jul-24-2024
    Huh?
If Mr Lewis really thinks that 80% of the "strip" riders are going to zone 3 then he's not really great at math...plus...the flat fees don't have the airport surcharge added on top...it's included in the flat fee.

    shuttles
Do they still have the fixed price shuttles? Slight inconvenience/waiting/your hotel might be the last drop off, etc., but at least you knew how much you'd pay. And I kinda liked the "tour" aspect, seeing other hotels (at least their back sides). That was before the fixed/zone taxi pricing came along. We used them all the time, airport to hotel. Hotel back to airport wasn't as dependable as to pick up time.

No flat rate to South Point

    re: shuttles
There are several shuttles still running. I liked them up until I was taking one downtown and ended up stopping at 2 places on the strip (one twice, because a bag was forgotten) and Palace Station en-route. 90 minutes between the airport and my vacation is too long. Also, they pick you up DT at 7am for a 11am flight. Shuttles waste too much precious Vegas time. If it's economy you are after, the city transit system (bus) is also a cheap option.

Rideshare service anyone? Welcome to the 21st century. :)

    Shuttles?
I only know of Beltrans. What are the other shuttles?
And Beltrans does not serve the El Cortez. Does any shuttle serve the EC?

    NO SURGE BUT SUR CHARGE
"Since Las Vegas became a zone city, the fares are calculated by the ride and aren't subject to surge pricing. This is technically true but a little misleading as the taxi authority had an automatic $10 surcharge added to the zone farefor March Madness. I alerted the LVA to warn readers and it made the daily LVA news in mid March. I wouls guess thatevents like F1, CES, Superbowl may also get hit with this surcharge.
