LVA Review

This restaurant was re-reviewed in the August 2011 LVA; some of the information contained in the review may no longer be accurate. This is one of the better Indian restaurants in town (it just missed making the “50 essential restaurants” our book Eating Las Vegas). It has a lunch buffet for $11.99 that includes lamb and chicken curry, sag paneer, daal, and several salads. It’s a good option, and you can use your MRB coupon for 25% off the entire bill to reduce the cost of the buffet to $8.99. Still, we prefer ordering off the menu here. This restaurant was reviewed in the February 2008 LVA; some of the information contained in the review may no longer be accurate. Yikes! Our favorite Indian restaurant, Shalimar, has closed. It apparently went with a whimper, as we didn’t learn about it until we began considering the merits of a new Indian joint, Origin India. We’d been so impressed with Origin of late that we were contemplating designating it our new favorite (which is when we got the bad news about Shalimar). So, decision made! Origin is the real deal, with good vindaloos and khormas (curries), as well as tandoori, pappadams, naan, and all the other specialties that make up this cuisine. Don’t know what to choose? Try it all. Origin is one of the few non-casino restaurants with a tasting menu. Two, in fact—$60 for vegetarian and $70 for meat (both for two)—that come with soup, salad, and samples of several entrées. If you’re an Indian-food aficionado, whatever main course you choose comes with a few sides, so you don’t need appetizers. Most dishes are in the $20 range, so with a $6 beer (almost mandatory that you drink at least one Indian brew—Kingfisher or Krait Cobra here—with a curry), you’re getting out for less than $30 per person. Hours are 11:30 am to 11:30 pm daily. The restaurant is located in the plaza directly across from the Hard Rock, in the company of several other ethnic-specialty restaurants, including Mexican, Korean, and sushi, along with the good Joe’s New York Pizza we’ve written about favorably.
