LVA Review

This restaurant was reviewed in the October 2009 LVA; some of the information contained in the review may no longer be accurate. When you walk up to the front door, you’ll find it locked. After feeling confused for a second, you notice the doorbell to the right and ring it. A secret panel opens. A face peers out. It’s the doorman inside and he makes a big show of looking you up and down. Apparently, you pass inspection, because a (hidden) side door opens and you walk into what looks like a dimly lit 1920s speakeasy. This is Capo’s bar and restaurant. It’s a pretty good gimmick that plays all the way through to the names on the dishes, such as “Wise Guy Alfredo” and “Racketeers Raviolis.” And though from past experience with highly gimmicky restaurants, you might not expect much from the food (we didn’t), Capo’s is an exception. The salads, soups (try the Italian egg drop), and pastas—made from Capo’s own recipes and prepared in an open kitchen—hold their own with the rest of the mob-themed ambience. Prices run a little high—spaghetti with one big meatball is $18.95, chicken and veal dishes are in the $20s, and steaks in the $30s—but portions are plentiful and all come with soup or salad and fresh bread. Other interesting touches include the pictures and photos of gangsters on the walls (and the private Roulette Room hidden behind one of them). It’s different and fun, especially if you relax and get into the flow of it. You’ll honestly forget that you’re in Vegas at all, at least until you walk back out that secret door. Lunch is served weekdays from 11 am to 3 pm. And one warning, a “Fugetaboutit Fridays” 2-for-1 offer has been misrepresented in several media reviews. This is a twofer for drinks at the bar only, not food.
